Astronomy fun in Hawaii

By Daniel Smith on Mar 30, 10 10:40 AM

Now one of the reasons I decided to study astrophysics at university was the thought of hanging around Hawaii with my feet up, drinking cocktails and waiting for the results to come in while being showered with attention from bikini-clad women.

To be honest, it was the only reason! Alas, like so many things in life, reality was much different. It only takes a couple of nights freezing on top of a hill above the M1 motorway while trying to get your telescope to work to dampen your spirits.

A hot cup of coca was the best I could manage. And there was no women within a 30-mile radius of us.

And any hopes of making a scientific discovery were dashed as the lights from the traffic below blocked out 90 per cent of the sky anyway!

My apologies, I'm just jealous you see...

Daniel Smith - a long time ago, in a galaxy far away just north of Watford, Daniel fancied himself as a scientist but turned out to be the worst scientist since that bloke who mapped out all those canals on Mars that turned out to be scratches on his telescope's lens. Luckily, he is now not working on the Large Hadron Collider inadvertently creating a black hole that would swallow the world but is safely behind a desk writing this blog, bringing you the fantastical underbelly of nature... weird science.
