Mars rover given a test drive

By Daniel Smith on Sep 29, 09 12:10 PM

British scientists take the ExoMars Rover out for a spin around a quarry.

The six-wheeled ESA robot has a provisional launch date of 2018 and will be tootling along on the red planet looking for interesting rocks.

What makes this mechanical explorer different, however, is the rover is largely autonomous - it can 'see' where it's going and navigate the safest path to a destination.

Daniel Smith - a long time ago, in a galaxy far away just north of Watford, Daniel fancied himself as a scientist but turned out to be the worst scientist since that bloke who mapped out all those canals on Mars that turned out to be scratches on his telescope's lens. Luckily, he is now not working on the Large Hadron Collider inadvertently creating a black hole that would swallow the world but is safely behind a desk writing this blog, bringing you the fantastical underbelly of nature... weird science.
