This is the first image ever taken of the Earth and the moon in one single frame.

It was taken by Voyager 1 back in 1977 as it made its way to the outer solar system.

Here's another shot of us, this time from the surface of Mars.

It's the first ever picture taken of our home planet from the surface of another planet and was snapped by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit one hour before sunrise.

Shuttle launches have become run of the mill these days (unless something goes wrong) but the launches remain a spectacular event as ever.

Here we have Endeavour cutting a bright swath through the night sky in 1998 as it keeps a date with the Russian Mir space station.

All these photos and much, much more can be found at Nasa's photo archives. If you come across anything better, please let me know.

Daniel Smith - a long time ago, in a galaxy far away just north of Watford, Daniel fancied himself as a scientist but turned out to be the worst scientist since that bloke who mapped out all those canals on Mars that turned out to be scratches on his telescope's lens. Luckily, he is now not working on the Large Hadron Collider inadvertently creating a black hole that would swallow the world but is safely behind a desk writing this blog, bringing you the fantastical underbelly of nature... weird science.
