Weird Science Cool Pic(s) of the Week

The Boston Globe's excellent Big Picture feature has cast its eye on Saturn this week - and what spectacular photos they are.

It features incredible snapshots taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft of the ringed planet and its moons.

The above scene is a compiled picture made up of 45 images taken over a two-hour period. Click on it (or any of the others) for a larger view.

This shot was taken using photos through red, green and blue filters for a more natural colour.

Now I love Saturn as much as the next man, but this has to be my favourite photo, taken during Cassini's close approach to the moon Iapetus. You could almost imagine riding the spacecraft itself as it makes its daring fly-by.

Daniel Smith - a long time ago, in a galaxy far away just north of Watford, Daniel fancied himself as a scientist but turned out to be the worst scientist since that bloke who mapped out all those canals on Mars that turned out to be scratches on his telescope's lens. Luckily, he is now not working on the Large Hadron Collider inadvertently creating a black hole that would swallow the world but is safely behind a desk writing this blog, bringing you the fantastical underbelly of nature... weird science.
