All the better to see you with

Sitting on your backside every night playing video games might have an upside.

Sure you'll no doubt gain a few pounds, put at least you'll be able to see the small print in the takeaway menu better.

It might be little actual use to science (so they say), but the (pretty much) completed International Space Station does make for a breathtaking sight.

The space shuttle Discovery has just delivered the final solar panel array, and the crew took this shot while they made their way back to the Earth's surface.

Recession or no recession, commercial space flight continues to make progress.

Virgin Galactic has just completed the third test flight of The WhiteKnightTwo (nicknamed 'Eve') - the mothership which will help launch a space ship into orbit.

licorice.jpg

Did you know liquorice has long been used as a treatment for much of what ails you?

I didn't. But new research indicates the black sweet can interfere with other drugs and so keep you feeling icky.

porc.jpeg

Baby porcupines are fluffy.

Which makes a lot of sense if you're the mother. I mean it would really sting if they came out already spiked and ready for action.

prawn.jpg

There you are, trying to save the world, and then some hungry prawns come along and ruin everything.

An experiment set up to help solve global warming has been undone by crafty crustaceans out for a good meal.

Fly me to the moon

By Daniel Smith on Mar 25, 09 08:55 AM

Ever wanted to zoom over an alien world like some kind of weird rocket-powered space bird? No? Just me then.

Anyway, data from Nasa's Cassini probe has been used to create 3D flyovers of Saturn's moon Titan. So you can at least pretend.

Cold fusion is back (again)

coldfusion.jpg

The old scientific wives' tale that is cold fusion is back in the news.

Cold fusion is the Holy Grail of renewable energy - a way of coaxing nuclear reactions at room temperature. Clean, unlimited energy for all.

Part croc, part machine

robocroc.jpg

Cuddly little animals hanging around Miami had better beware... there's a cyborg crocodile on the loose!

The croc had his head banged in by a car and was found wandering about badly injured and starving.

Kaboom in Alaska!

Alaska's Mount Redoubt Volcano has gone kablooey.

To be more accurate it has blown its top FIVE times.

Daniel Smith

Daniel Smith - a long time ago, in a galaxy far away just north of Watford, Daniel fancied himself as a scientist but turned out to be the worst scientist since that bloke who mapped out all those canals on Mars that turned out to be scratches on his telescope's lens. Luckily, he is now not working on the Large Hadron Collider inadvertently creating a black hole that would swallow the world but is safely behind a desk writing this blog, bringing you the fantastical underbelly of nature... weird science.
