Weird Science Cool Pic of the Week

With all the talk about space launches going wrong (and my blog about exploding rockets which I put together before this week's $273m NASA mishap), let's focus on when it does go right.

This spectacular image is of a shuttle launch taken by astronaut John W Young while flying aboard NASA's Shuttle Training Aircraft.

Young walked on the moon back in 1972 during the Apollo 16 mission and went on to fly two shuttle missions himself.

He finally retired from NASA in 2004 at the age of 74 - but he could have scuppered his astronaut career early on when he smuggled a corned beef sandwich onto the Gemini 3 spacecraft in 1962.

Nasa bosses were not amused and were worried about crumbs clogging up the craft's instruments.

Weird Science Factoid: Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adulthood the number is reduced to 206. Now that's just plain freaky.

Daniel Smith - a long time ago, in a galaxy far away just north of Watford, Daniel fancied himself as a scientist but turned out to be the worst scientist since that bloke who mapped out all those canals on Mars that turned out to be scratches on his telescope's lens. Luckily, he is now not working on the Large Hadron Collider inadvertently creating a black hole that would swallow the world but is safely behind a desk writing this blog, bringing you the fantastical underbelly of nature... weird science.
