TV presenting's a lot harder than it looks so Ant & Dec are worth their millions
I briefly tuned in to The Wright Stuff on Five this morning (anything but Jeremy Kyle...) to see Denise Lewis attempting to be a TV presenter.
The West Brom athlete has had a few goes at establishing a media career, none of which have worked out very well. She was hopeless when she tried to be a sports reporter on Midlands Today.
She's improved a bit, but on The Wright Stuff she was stumbling over her words and found it tough to explain what a news story about fat women was all about.
TV presenting is a lot harder than it looks. Successful people in other fields, like sport or music, shouldn't think they will be good on telly just because they're famous (eh, Jamelia?).
I think I'd be rubbish at appearing on telly - It was bad enough being filmed this week by The Xtra Factor when they came to Birmingham. I didn't know whether to look into the camera or at the girl asking questions and found the whole thing rather uncomfortable.
So that's why I stick to writing and just watch telly rather than appear on it. I leave the presenting to those who know what they're doing.
Like Ant and Dec, who are naturals in front of the camera. Last week they signed a new two-year deal with ITV1, reportedly worth £10 million each.
Of course, nobody is worth that much and it's an obscene amount of money, especially when others are struggling in a recession.
But in a world where all TV stars are overpaid, I reckon Ant and Dec earn their cash more than most. And when millions tune in on Sunday to see them host I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!, we'll see why.
