Dirt 3 - Xbox 360 - * * * *

By Steve Wollaston on Jun 11, 11 02:24 PM

Codemasters have a rich tradition of quality driving games going back to the seminal Colin McRae which blended into the DiRT franchise.

The third game in the instalment puts its pedal firmly to the metal and takes gamers on a blistering racing rush from start to finish.

Strap tight your seatbelts and prepare to hurtle through forests and bounce along mud-tracks on a hell-for-leather journey that's the closest thing I've seen to the real thrills and spills of rally driving.

The cars, scenery and all-round realism are mesmerising, with the rain at times pounding your windscreen and the tracks reacting exactly as you would expect to the conditions, whether it be snow, gravel or concrete.

This is backed up with very tight gameplay and a responsive control system that is challenging but, more importantly, enjoyable and highly addictive.

This is very much harking back to the good old days of Colin McRae and has the same feeling of being a true racing sim.

It goes one step further with the blistering realism and true breakneck speed.

Luckily, it also includes a very handy rewind feature that lets you wipe out your worst mistakes. You will crash a lot and if you want to master career mode you will need to hone your skills accordingly to really get the most out of it.

The gymkhana-style showpiece driving events are excellent for doing just that, learning skills and techniques in a fun mode that gives the whole package a different spin.

Plenty of unlockable extras and options give it some serious depth and it will appeal to casual and serious racers alike.

In a nutshell, though, all you need to know is that this is a solid, highly playable game that at times is really spectacular.

Back in the day when you were stuck on the train with your old-school brick phone the best it got in terms of entertainment was a quick blast on Snake or Hangman.

These days it's a whole lot more sophisticated with high-end graphics, touch screens and great sound.

The iphone really has changed the face of mobile gaming.

This latest Tiger Woods mobile version is an example of the quality on offer.

After fully customising your character, you get to whack your way round 18 holes.

Everything from club selection, shot type and backspin are crucial for success.

All you need is your judgement and an accurate swipe of your finger.

●● The game can be purchased via the App Store and ITunes for £2.99

This is the latest in the Buzz! quiz series and, with Move support and few other tweaks, is the best yet.

As always, it's good for a laugh but be warned: you'll need friends!

It does what it says on the tin, being a quiz video game based on music. Up to four players can battle it out to see who's Take That and who's East 17.

The game comes with wireless buzzers - although you can use the Move - to play.
Smart presentation married with some imaginative rounds makes this a must-buy for would-be John Peels both young and old.

We are a bit slow off the grid with this review. It has been around for a few weeks now and is doing pretty well in the charts as you can see above.

If you are a fan of Formula One and fancy yourself as a bit of a Lewis Hamilton then you will be impressed with how gripping and realistic this game is at times.

It has an excellent career game and some solid gameplay and you will find yourself losing a few hours of your day when you get behind the wheel.

The graphics and quality of production on the game do total justice to the excellent gameplay and it's nice to play a game that looks the part and plays the part.

Certainly the best Formula One game I have played and I can't see any fan or casual follower of the sport being disappointed in this.

Forget Kinect, Move, and anything else for that matter - this is gaming news.

Warner Bros have today announced a sequel to 2009's hit Batman: Arkham Asylumwhich will be developed by Rocksteady games and has been billed for an Autumn 2011 release.

The game it seems will be set in Gotham City and looks to be an epic open-world adventure for gamers.

Could it get any better than that???

Xbox 360 review: Metro 2033

By Steve Wollaston on Apr 7, 10 07:53 PM

FINALLY a game that helped me come out of mourning for Fallout 3, probably because, with its post-apocalyptic darkness and doom, it shares a lot in common.

Based on a novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the game is adapted with help from the novelist himself.

Apologies for not bringing you this title in the Christmas round-up, but there have been so many games lately we have literally been drowning in a sea of Japanese RPG's and Wii party games!

When it comes to family party games, the Scene It! franchise is just the job for when you have friends over or fancy some good family fun.

Bayonetta (360)

If you haven't heard of Bayonetta, I applaud you! That means you have avoided the internet, TV and magazine saturation of the past two weeks.

The latest in the ever successful Japanese franchise that is Pokemon has arrived just in time for Christmas.

Once again Disney are sending us back to Radiator Springs and this time it's for some high octane racing.
