Nintendo have brought Fox McCloud back for another adventure, this time in 3D on the new handheld console.

It's a long time since I played Star Fox on the SNES and I have fond memories of what a quality title that was.

I also enjoyed the N64 version of the game and I am glad to see it getting another revival in much the same way other Nintendo brands have had.

Nintendo have a real nack of taking older characters and reinventing them, it happens a lot with Sonic, Mario and Donkey Kong and they like to revisit previous success stories.

There have been some pretty decent launh games for the 3DS as well as a couple of real stinkers, this game sits higher up the scale.

Interestingly this is a reboot of the N64 version of the game but done so in a way that makes it feel like a totally new concept.

For example the script has been freshened, the voices are improved and it also takes full advantage of it's new home and particularly the new gyro sensor to control the plane.

It's a mission based adventure set in the Lylat system which sees gamers visiting different planets in the system for each mission.

The missions end with fierce boss battles heading towards a gripping final battle.

The gameplay is very solid and responsive and showcases the best of Nintendo's ability in terms of controls and user- experience.

It is also very high quality in the visual department, the 3D element adds a real depth to the game and it plays perfectly in tandem with the control system.

A new multiplayer option lets up to four players engage in fierce aerial combat via a local wireless connection (using four systems and one game card via DS Download Play).

The multiplayer mode also includes new power-ups and special weapons. Players can use the Nintendo 3DS system's inner camera to display a live video feed of their faces as they battle, bringing a new level of fun and personalization to the multiplayer experience.

With plenty of playability and replayability on top of a strong overall package this is one of the strongest 3DS offerings to date and a real nostalgia trip for me.

Enjoy!
