Review: Call Of Juarez: The Cartel
Red Dead Redemption proved last year that the Wild West is as sexy as ever for gamers and this third instalment of the Call Of Juarez series is proof again that gunslinging is still big business.
This game is a unique mix of the old school Wild West vibe but with a modern flavour in the form of big guns and strip clubs.
It's basically a modern take on the Wild West but with a real attempt keep an authentic feel to things.
The theme is very modern with an FBI agent an LA Cop and a Federal Drugs Enforcement Agency officer whose HQ has just been attacked by a notorious Mexican drugs cartel.
Good guys and bad guys duly delivered you will struggle to battle through against fierce resistance and heavy firepower. Each main character is also slightly tainted too which makes it more interesting.
It's a lawless existence, you can trust no-one and as the journey evolves through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and, of course Juarez in Mexico you will face a challenging and brutal adventure.
There is a lot of variety to the game with driving and interrogation aspects and a good variety to the many shooting aspects of the game.
It's best played with pals in 3-player online mode playing through the story but don't worry when you have achieved that because multiplayer is pleasing.
The variety of weapons on offer is also extensive and playing with sniper rifles can be as much fun as machine gun rampages.
Removing the core Western theme of the game could have been this game's biggest issue, as it happens it isn't, bt in removing that winning formula it does highlight the games other glaring shortcomings,
It isn't as distinguished as your Call Of Duty games for example and in comparison this is a fairly run of the mill shooter - it doesn't really offer that much we haven't seen already at all.
Which is a shame because it is a decent game which is perfectly playable and very well-themed and atmospheric, however it is a Western that isn't a Western and a game that we have seen before.
Good fun though...

Breaking up the dull shooting are some really unenjoyable driving sequences that are plagued by crashes and deaths you can neither predict nor avoid and a nigh-unusable dashboard viewing angle.
