PS3 Review: SuperStars V8: Next Challenge

By Steve Wollaston on Feb 28, 10 09:00 PM

DON your racing gloves and lucky helmet for a speed demon with a Mediterranean flavour.

SuperStars V8: Next Challenge is based on a car-racing Italian Championship and comes hot on the heels of the original SuperStars V8.

But all you need to know is can it go nose-to-nose with the likes of Grand Turismo?

Thanks to impressive loading times, you don't have to wait long before putting the pedal to the metal around one of 11 mostly Spanish and Italian tracks.

And it all looks pretty good - the graphics are fine and the racing engine more than decent.

The computer AI is a little unpredictable, though. Starting from way down the pack you'll need all your racing skills to cut a swathe through the pack.

But if you manage to land pole, you're in for an easy ride unless you make a serious mistake.

Nice touches include some very realistic weather and easy network play that allows you to battle it out with up to 15 other drivers online.

It's perfectly passable, pardon the pun, but SuperStars V8 will have to up a gear or two to compete with the nimble heavyweights that dominate console racing.
