The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Nintendo DS)

By Steve Wollaston on Dec 12, 09 11:14 PM

Soon the whole world will be raving about the next generation of Zelda games on the Wii.
For now though we have the offering in the franchise on the DS, and what a belting little game it is too!
Starting off 100-years-later than the last game we find Princess Zelda and Link off on a new adventure.

It's a new adventure controlled purely by the stylus which is excellent. Navigation is just how you want it and for the bread and butter battle scenes the stylus is exemplary.
In terms of the gameplay the title can't be faulted really. Puzzles, exploration and action are great. Very exciting and very engaging.
I loved the summoning of the whirlwind by blowing in the stylus - touch of genius.
Another touch of genius is the more meaty storyline and involvement of Zelda, a hugely famous yet somewhat unknown character.
The story is as deep, quirky and involving as you would imagine it to be.
This may not be the big game that Nintendo obsessees are waiting for but this is a very well constructed, beautiful addition to the series.

Steve Wollaston - Sunday Mercury games reviewer Steve has been writing about video games for donkey's years. In fact he is probably far too old for it now which is why you will see a lot of reviews been done by kids... He has been nominated three times for Regional Games Journalist Of The Year at the Games Media Awards, but never wins. His major love is sports games and rates Sensible World of Soccer circa 90's as the greatest game ever made - closely followed by Championship Manager 2. Skyrim has currently taken over his life.
