Borderlands (360)

By Steve Wollaston on Nov 25, 09 11:07 AM

2K games have come up trumps with what they are billing as the first ever 'Role Play Shooter' - a true hybrid between an RPG and FPS.

I'm not so sure that is the case. Fallout 3 for me was probably a lot closer to being a true pioneer in that sense.

This is for me a shooter all the way, a highly stylised, brutal, cartoon shooter with lashings of gore and some insanely over-the-top action.

You are armed with '87 Bazillion guns' - their words not mine!

Therefore you can expect some serious artillery on display and some fantastic action.

Graphically the game is very different to what you are used to, the crisp, bright and brilliant cartoon graphics make for a fantastic gaming experience.

Although the subject matter is looting and shooting it does feel a bit less 'dark' than Fallout 3 for example. A game that was highly stylized itself, just another part of the spectrum.

Fallout 3 had a storyline and depth that was pretty much unseen in gaming on the Xbox 360 before, Borderlands is way, way off that. It concentrates purely on the high octane relentless action.

There are some fantastic creatures for you to annihilate in the game and they bad guys come thick and fast and scare the hell out of you. Imagine elements of Halo2, Fallout 3 and XIII and you pretty much have Borderlands.

It's a great game, plenty of customization of your character and great fun as you search the wastelands of Planet Pandora for a mysterious and mythical Alien Vault.

Plenty of bandits to massacre on the way and settlers to aid as you progress. I have enjoyed very few games as much as this one so far this year.

There is a real addictiveness to the game that hooks you in straight away and it is undeniably fantastic.

The game is not without its flaws though. It is not as expansive as it would have you believe. The gorgeous level designs are a good disguise for levels that are fairly straightforward and at times predictable.

Nevertheless your thirst for more is quenched in the multiplayer mode and Xbox Live and 4-player modes are stunning to say the least and you will play, and play and then play some more!

You won't see a better looking game than this all year, it is stunning. Gory but stunning.
