Halo ODST (Xbox 360)

By Steve Wollaston on Oct 23, 09 10:52 PM

HALO needs no introduction. So far the three instalments have thrilled millions and changed the face of first-person shooters.

This isn't Halo 4, sadly, it's essentially a prequel to Halo 3.

The game places you in the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, an elite futuristic paratrooper squadron sent into control the city of New Mombasa.

The city has been taken over by Covenant forces and your first mission is to stay alive.

Halo fans will know the story, the ins and outs and the way flashbacks inter-weave it into the Halo world.

I have played all of the Halo games and loved them, but even I can't remember the plots. I just loved annihilating those little creatures with the humps on their backs who pop up making an annoying Ewok-like noise.

This is very much more of the same - it's an expansion pack, but a good one.

All the old weapons are here, all the old bad guys are present, but it's an all-new battlefield.

There is a vast 'open-world' feel, freedom to roam and license to drive anything you come across. Graphics are very samey, but of a high quality.

Multiplayer is where this Halo add-on justifies the full price tag. The online action is up there with Call Of Duty and Goldeneye on the N64.

Loaded with all 24 maps released so far, it introduces three new ones - Heretic, Longshore, and Citadel.

A whole host of new multiplayer options await such as the cooperative campaign mode, Firefight. This is a great reminder of the brilliance of Halo and a decent attempt to quench the thirst of fans.
