Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince (Wii)

By Steve Wollaston on Jul 24, 09 12:51 PM

YOU may or not be aware of it but currently there is quite a big Harry Potter flick doing the rounds at a multiplex near you...

There is also this oh so inevitable 'all-format' video game tie-in.

You know the drill, quite often these are turgid, badly thought out cash cows with little entertainment value and gameplay so threadbare it makes Bobby Charlton's comb-over look life an afro.

They have been getting better though, games companies are starting to realise people aren't going to keep lapping up mediocrity for £40 a pop.

EA have got this point very quickly and have worked very hard to give gamers a rewarding and enchanting version of Harry Potter.

In dad role I played the game and looked for a few key areas, I wanted to know whether the gameplay was varied, whether it felt like a Harry Potter game and whether it was worth the cash... I liked it, a lot, although it was short in terms of the main story.

The gameplay is good, very inventive and once again making full use of the Wii and its capabilities. The graphics are astounding, the best on the Wii to date.

The look of the game is really impressive; wandering around the vast Hogwarts castle and grounds, and exterior locations like The Burrow is a real joy - especially for fans.

This is where the lastability comes in really.

It has recreated the castle in very detailed manner and it is exciting wandering around the locations you have read about and seen on the films.

Sixteen-year-Emily gave her view on the new game:

"The game is great fun, I watched the film first which was the best way to do it because there are some real spoilers in the game.

"There is a lot to do in the game and a lot of variety as the story unfolds.

"The gameplay changes a lot and has you taking part in different things, for example you get to take part in a potions class, mixing potions with the Wiimote and unleashing clouds of smoke when you botch it up!

"You get to participate in Quidditch holding the Wiimote like it is a broom!

"Then the best bit for me was the duelling, actually using your Wiimote as a wand and unleashing spells on enemies in a contest - this is excellent fun.

"There are some great bits in the game and I would recommend it, I love exploring the castle that for me was the biggest enjoyment.

"In terms of recreating the world of Harry Potter - this is the best game I have played so far."
