Punch Out (Wii)
Nintendo
It says a lot about me that when I used to go to Drayton Manor as a kid I would shun the rides and go straight for the arcade.
There was a triangle of games that glinted and caught my eye; I headed straight for them every time.
First up was Paper Boy - the BMX handlebars on the console were just brilliant and the perfect tools to help you hurtle through suburbia throwing rolled up copies of The New York Post at tramps and grandmas.
Second up was Afterburner - the one with the moving console you sat in - simply tremendous.
Last and definitely Wollaston's favourite was Super Punch Out... Little Mac against the world.
The controllers were shaped like curved gloves and you used to violently pound away at the controls throwing jabs and hooks to the sound of 'Mighty blow, mighty blow' - and when you really had them on the ropes the magic "Ding Ding - knock him out!" would ring out and signal the time for you to smash the magic KO button.
To say these were the glory days is an understatement!
And now those good guys and gals at Nintendo have brought out a new reworked version of the game for a new generation.
And what could be more fitting than using the Wiimote and Nunchuk controller to look like a complete wazzock throwing air punches in your living room!?
The reason this game was so perfect in the first place was because the gameplay was addictive, the characters were perfect and the cartoon brilliance was just so charming... it's all here again folks and this is just such an addictive little game.
The enemies are great, the build up and background stories are good and there is some nicely worked in communication with your trainer. The career mode is top-drawer as you work your way from minor to major circuit.
Difficulty is an interesting one really because although the controls are easy to grasp it is timing that will be the judge. The game revolves around your ability to dodge punches as well as throw them.
The game is hard and that is the beauty of it, you fly through the level you should fly through but then it's a learning curve all the way.
Humour is rife; there has been a lot of effort put into this game to make it a real treat that bridges generation gaps.
It is simple, addictive, funny, has perfect gameplay and will make your arms ache like hell and for me personally it brought back some really treasured memories.
