Wheelman (Xbox 360)

By Steve Wollaston on Apr 27, 09 04:23 PM

THE Vin Diesel-based Chronicles of Riddick was a surprise hit a few years back and this game in many ways continues that run of form.

This is a game that borrows plenty from GTA - so much so that at first glance, and without playing it, you could be forgiven for thinking that it's an empty clone.

A clone it is, but actually there s a fair bit of meat on the bones here.

You play as Milo Burik, an undercover agent posing as a driver for hire trying to infiltrate the criminal fraternity in Barcelona.

Along the way you have to partake in some serious car chases and motor combat as you try to ram cars off the road, into walls or generally just blast the hell out of them with your gun till something gives way.

There are some well thought out and exciting missions, there are core missions and plenty of off-topic missions in a big open city.

The game is clever enough to lift some good ideas from GTA and add a few of its own, such as the 'air jack' - a mid-air car theft. What it doesn't have is anywhere near the depth of GTA - but I don't think it was ever meant to have.

This is a great action title, a lot of thrills and spills just lacking in any real ingenuity and longevity. It's not without glitches and some can be rather tedious on occasions.

But - the crucial thing is that it's fun, it looks good, the story is OK and it is certainly better than I thought it would be!
