So close to big money at Pokerstars final table
MY fingernails are gone after coming tantalisingly close to a huge payday on Sunday.
Entered the Pokerstars weekly £250,000 tournie for $10 and went on my best ever run.
After five hours play I was 18th out of 100 players left and was sitting on a cool 1.25 million chips, from a starting stack of 3,000.
But with the blinds at 40,000 and 80,000, I knew I didn't have too much time to hang in and wait for a monster.
After a couple of rounds of seeing just painful junk cards, I was dealt a pair of sixes while on the button.
With everyone folding to me I raised to 240,000 hoping to see the larger stacked SB and BB fold, but the latter just had to see a flop which came A-5-7.
He checked so I put in an aggressive 300,000 bet, trying to represent the ace - but the dreaded call follow.
Turn came a nothing and I was now prepared to give up the pot to a bet, so was surprised to receive another check.
So surprised in fact, that I pushed all in sensing weakness, like some on-line Phil Hellmuth prodigy.
I was partly right - the kicker for his ace was a weak 4.
With no miracle on the river, I bombed out in a respectable 59th position, picking up $248 for my efforts.
Yet never has banking a pretty decent payday left me feeling so gutted.
I was, perhaps, only a couple of good plays away from making that final table where the money began at $1,379 for ninth and increased rapidly to a whopping $24,813 for first.
Damn it.
