Online poker - is it rigged?
I HAVE a conspiracy theory about on-line poker - all the conspiracy theories about the game are true.
Trawl any on-line forum and you'll find cursed players coming up with more sinister plots than a whole series of X-Files.
Some claim certain sites have a 'doom' button that can switch a rock of a player, who had been skillfully winning huge pots and mega-buck tournaments, into a hapless donkey.
Others believe that ringers secretly reel in your cash by playing incognito for the site - with the advantage that they know what cards are coming in next.
Then there is the 'cash out curse'. This goes something like the player who makes a big withdrawal will then endure an unbelievable run of bad luck until they have blown everything they had ever won.
To be honest, after playing 4,000-plus games online I've often wondered about the legitimacy of some sites.
I mean, how often can you see your full house beaten by quads, or quads beaten by a straight flush before you think something fishy is going on here?!
A recent cash game did show me that the pain of an unjust beating can strike anywhere, at any time.
During four hours of live play, I saw pocket kings whipped by pocket 10s for a ã150 pot when the third ten flopped. An A5 beat an AK when the 5 rode in on the river, while my own pocket jacks were beaten by an AQ in a heads-up when the lady turned up on the turn.
Yet while the best hand pre-flop did not always win, I never saw what you would call a real bad beat.
No, the fact is that the really truly awful beatings take place on-line.
The difference between me and other conspiracy theorists, though, is that I believe the cold decks average themselves out in the end - so EVERY player gets a fair chance to make a profit.
But if you can't stand the heartache of losing against all the odds, there is a solution: find a site that pays a bad beat jackpot.
Losing is always painful - but not when you get paid for it!
