Tigers Triumph, United make a point, England smash the Windies, and Maximo Park come to K Towers!!
So we did it, it may not have been pretty, and it may not have been a great performance from the boys, but after a full season, and the Playoff Final, Leicester Tigers are once again Guinness Premiership Champions thanks to a 10-9 victory over London Irish at Twickers on Saturday.
What a game huh, Irish pounded our try line for massive periods but our defence was immense, and of course, there were those chances at goal they turned down to go for a try, that effectively would have won them the game........but hindsight is an amazing thing!
In fact it may not have been the free flowing dynamic game that both sides can play, but that didn't matter, because finals are all about tension and about going to the wire, and this game had that in spades.
I was uber impressed with Dan Hipkiss for the Tigers, sure he has always had brute strength and the amazing ability to stay on his feet, but he showed an attacking flair I didn't know was a part of his game on Sat, and his increased speed and twinkling feet wouldn't have gone unnoticed by Martin Johnson.
Up next for the Tigers is the Heineken Cup Final against Leinster on Saturday at 5pm, and they can expect the ante to be upped again against their Irish opponents, and I personally cant wait, although I do feel that Leicester will have to play much better than they did against London Irish to win the Big One this weekend, but cometh the Hour, cometh the Tigers........hopefully!!
Man United also walked away with the Premiership title on Saturday, and I have to say, I think they are probably the most "Complete" team to have lifted the prestigious trophy. Sure I feel that Chelsea, Liverpool Arsenal et al have a good enough first 11 to compete with Fergusons men, but the problem, as always lays, in strength in depth.
I mean United on Saturday against arsenal had Berbatov, Scholes, Ji Sung Park and Anderson on the bench, all top premiership players, while Arsenal had Walcott, Vela, Ramsey and Bendtner. Yes the Arsenal bench is full of promising youngsters, but that's the point, United can bring on players like Scholes who have more experience in their little toes than the Arsenal reserve team have on their whole team bus.
Okay, they do have the money, and yes we all hate Man U, but you have to admire what Ferguson has built up at Old Trafford, and I cant see them declining at any point soon, and just goes to show how wrong everyone was at the start of the season when they thought Ferguson had lost the plot!
It was great to see England wrap up the two match Test Series against the Windies yesterday by an innings, and it bodes well for the Ashes, although Chris Gayle should be getting his players to take a long hard look at them selves for the way they capitulated.
They looked a completely different side in the reverse series in the Caribbean just a couple of weeks ago, and you get the feeling that when they are away form home, they just don't want to know when the going gets tough. This is a big psychological issue, and one that the Windies team will have to work on, but lets take nothing away from Strauss' men, who looked good in all departments, from Broad's awesome aggressive spells of fast bowling, to Onions emergence as someone with a lot of potential, all the way to through Jimmy Anderson finally fulfilling his.
Oh and that's not even mentioning the Batting line up, who with the addition of Bopara batting at three have simply been amazing, batting the Windies out of the game in both matches in the first innings, which bodes really well for when the pitches get batter later on in the year.
One thing that has impressed me more than anything else is England's level of aggression and commitment, and I truly feel that this team has what it takes to get the Ashes back of the Aussies come the summer, and don't forget we still have a certain Freddie to return as well......bring it!!!
Maximo Park played live at K and Q Towers today, and it was great to see them showcase their new album Quicken The Heart to a few select winners, and I got the band to sign all of my Charity stuff after the gig...........here they are!
That reminds me, the Offside Streetbike Motorbike is now full of signatures, and if you want to go and see it in all of its glory, and maybe try and buy it (all profits go the Teenage Cancer Trust!) it is now resident at Streetbike at Mucklows Hill in Halesowen, so pop along, see Gary, Jason and the team there and have a coffee!!
This week I am on my normal overnights show 3-5am on Kerrang, and my 1-3pm show on Q, but as from Thursday morning I am also covering for my best mate Johnny Doom on the Late License, so expect 4 hours of the best new music from 1-5am Thursday and Friday!
I will also be DJ'ing at the Velvet Lounge in Worcester this Thursday night from 11pm, so pop down, although I will hit you up with another blog before then!!!
Oh and this week I am mostly riding a Triumph Rocket 3 and Suzuki GSX-R 1000.......I love my life!
