The Champions Elect, Clutching at Straws, Twickers Awaits, Plus Cipriani & Gough on the Big Show!

By Luke Wilkins on May 16, 09 09:50 AM

These two have big plans for today.jpg

Man United will be crowned Premier League Champions today when they play my beloved Arsenal at Old Trafford, bringing an end to one of the most exciting title races of the last few years. I hate to say it, but they deserve it too, as they have consistently performed well, even when they had key players out injured, and they have that knack of winning the big games.

Ferguson is a legend, a rosy cheeked "I wish he was England Manager" legend admittedly, but a legend none the less. He has built a squad of superstar players at Man U, but somehow managed to keep their desire fresh, and get the best out of them. How he does that while other clubs have found it hard to keep their momentum and drive, just look at Villa, is a credit to his interpersonal skills.........or more accurately his ability to scare the Bejesus out of even the richest well paid, manicured footballer, which in my book is all good.

Of course they might still lose, and then its game on with one week to go, but this side is not one to go blowing its chances, and I expect Fergusons men to be crowned Champions by 2pm today.

This though could play into Baggies fans hands, as if United do wrap up the title in the early KO, it effectively means that Liverpool will have nothing to play for at the Hawthorns, and with Hull and Newcastle within reach, there is still a glimmer of hope for Tony Mowbray's side to pull off another miraculous escape.

As my friends who are Hull City fans remind me each week though, this is a time for clubs at the bottom end of the table to feel some incredible seesawing emotions, pairing blind optimism with abject dejection, although as a neutral I say, bring on the tension and drama!

Lets hope this is a scene we get to see this evening at Twickers!.jpg

Today also sees the showpiece final of the Guinness Premiership Rugby season at Twickenham when the mighty Leicester Tigers take on London Irish to decide who walks away with the league title. Many people often berate the playoff setup at the end of the year, saying the title should be decided on the final league places.

I actually though have come to love this high drama show piece, even if in the past it has meant the Tigers missing out on the championship in the harshest way possible, it provides a cavalcade of excitement that you just don't get otherwise.

Murphy will Spearhead the Tigers attacking platform.jpg

Richard Cockerill has brought the cement and power to a Tigers team that had almost forgotten how to win at the start of the season, and his gritty edge and determination has rubbed off on a very talented squad. I mean, who would have thought they would manage to pick themselves up after THAT Heineken Cup semi final shootout win to beat a resurgent Bath 7 days later...............it was simply an immense performance.

Irish pose a much more attacking threat though, and have the pace and ability to score from their own 22, although I am going to go with my heart, and say Tigers by 5................yep another nail biter!

So on Offside today we will be focusing on the Premier Leagues penultimate week, with the possibly title deciding early kick off, plus of course Villa, who could do the Baggies a favour by beating Boro, and Newcastle, who face a crucial game against Europa League chasing Fulham in their bid to stay up.

Bopara makes it three in a row, becoming only the fifth Englishman to do so.jpg

We will also follow the third day of the Durham Test Match which England are dominating thanks to tons from Cook and Bopara if, of course, mother nature doesn't intervene, and I'll also be keeping a close eye on the SPL where Rangers are hoping to go three points clear at the top with one game to go.

Danny will be a guest on todays show.jpg

Joining me on the show this week is none other than England and Wasps number 10 Danny Cipriani, who has quite justifiably come under a lot of stick recently for his "Hollywood" ways, I pull no punches as I confront him about his attitude towards the game, how he is preparing himself for a summer not on the Lions Tour, and just what it means to him to pull on that England shirt. He will also be previewing the Premiership final, and joining in on the banter front.

If that wasn't enough, I'll also be chatting to former England fast bowling legend and now "celebrity come dancing on ice with your pet type thing" superstar Darren Gough about the current England cricket team, and our chances in the Ashes!

Alongside Dazzler.jpg

This schmorgasboard of sporting action is all on the Sony Gold Award Winning Kerrang Radio from 1pm today, on 105.2FM across the West Midlands, or nationally on DAB, Sky and Freeview, so I'll catch you then my illustrious compadres, and don't forget to read the latest chapter in my Motorcycle Diaries in which I put the world's most powerful scooter, the Suzuki Burgman 650 through its paces.
