My Busted Neck Returns, and Probably the Most Perfect Weekend of Sport Ever.......Almost!
Apologies firstly for the lack of blogs over the weekend, but unfortunately my busted neck returned with a vengeance while weight training last week, although this was an altogether new pain, this time involving migraines which have meant apart from when I have been at work (which has been A LOT!), I have mostly been hiding in a darkened room, which is rubbish when you consider the weather, but it did allow me to watch all of the amazing amount of sport that was on over the Bank Holiday...........and it almost went perfectly to plan!
Firstly I have to start with the Heineken Cup Final, where my beloved Leicester Tigers lost out in a thriller against Leinster, and while I was gutted, there is no doubt the better team won. We played well, but there aggression at the break down was immense, and apart from some rather sublime individual skill at times, the only time we were really on top was when the Irish side were down to 14.
Oh well, no double this year, but at least we won the League, and with Cockerill in place for next season, hopefully we can build on this success and aim to go one better next year. It was a hell of a game though, and migraine or not, I was shouting at the telly like a madman and managed to chew off half my finger nails in the last 20 minutes!
If that wasn't drama enough, how about Survival Sunday? Which turned out more like lacklustre Sunday for the Geordies as their tenure in the top flight was brought to an end, and I was kind of gutted as I predicted in my column that Boro and Hull were the ones to get relegated, mostly because I thought Newcastle would win at Villa..........yeah right!
The Geordies deserved to go down after putting in one of the worst performances I have seen on a footy pitch, there was zero passion from the players, no commitment, and how they thought they were going to score by just hoofing straight balls forward from the back is beyond me. Did they not even have a game plan? Ah well, if Shearer stays I expect them to come back up a better side, as he will get rid of the overpaid and useless players, and bring in people more like him, with a desire and love for the game and club, in fact I wonder how much he wished he had brought his boots on Sunday so he could of played, hell, a team of geriatric, blind women would have played better.
As for Hull................wow how lucky can you get, they just about deserved to stay up after their awesome start to the season, but Phil Brown will have to buy well over the summer or it will only be brief respite for the Tigers, as their run in form was atrocious and should be ringing a few alarm bells, although I know a few Hull City fans who won't care and will be partying all summer to celebrate their survival. Congrats to Sunderland who played really well against a top Chelsea side and although they lost, did enough to survive, even if Ricky Sbragia decided enough was enough and stepped down after the game, which came as a bit of surprise to me, but obviously he didn't want to get caught up in trying to fill Old Grey Beards boots, and you can't blame him for that.
Jenson Button made it five out of six wins this season in Formula One at the Monaco GP, and it must be said, it was a joy to watch the Brit driving so smoothly around one of the most notoriously hard tracks in the world. Button won't even talk about winning the title yet, but he has really impressed me this season, banishing all of those "Playboy" tags he has accrued over the years, and has showed everyone just how classy he really is, and today he has been compared to Michael Schumacher by his boss Ross Brawn......who should know as he was the Germans team manager at Ferrari.
Talking of which the Italians have come on leaps and bounds, and by finishing 3rd and 4th effectively announced that their F60 car is back up to the pace, and although Hamilton showed some awesome driving skills on the day, he must be worried that his McLaren struggled to keep up on one of the slower circuits in the season, and the World Champion must be wondering where it all went wrong!
We also had the Play-offs, with Burnley clinching promotion to the Premiership by beating Sheffield Utd and Owen Coyle has worked wonders at the Lancashire club, and it will be great to see them lining up against the Big Boys next season.
It was a top few days for England in the cricket too as they stuffed the Windies at Bristol and have just wrapped up the win at Edgbaston today, and I'm overjoyed with the way the team are playing. Bopara is a real find, and England have suddenly remembered how to play One Day cricket again........although to be fair it is only against the Windies, who have been awful on this tour and must be hoping to be on a plane back to the Caribbean as soon as possible (If you look up lacklustre in the dictionary, you get a pic of Chris Gayle staring back at you!), while the England lads will be licking their lips at the prospect of taking this form into the Ashes!
If that wasn't enough I was over the moon to see the England team pick up the win at Twickenham this weekend in the latest round of the IRB 7's season, it was a top performance and their comeback from 19-0 down at half time against New Zealand in the final was amazing, with them winning the game and the tournament in sudden death extra time.
Obviously this was all down to me training with them two weeks ago down in London and passing on all of my skills, knowledge and expertise..........yeah right!!!
This week apart from trying to invent a new neck from a piece of toilet roll and some super glue, I will mostly be doing 1am-7am on Kerrang until Friday, as I get the pleasure of filling in for my mate Johnny Doom on the Late License, as well as for Dan Morfitt on Early Brekky, with my show sandwiched in-between. I will also be on Q radio this week too, but only from 2-3pm Mon-Fri as we have some cool music specials for you in the 1 o'clock hour!
I am also spending a huge amount of time on the new Suzuki GSX-R 1000 after spending last week on the amazing Triumph Rocket 3, and I have to say.........it's probably the sports bike of the year, but you can read my full review of the Rocket here, and I will have the GSXR chapter up on Friday!
Oh and don't forget to pop down to Streetbike in Halesowen to check out the Kerrang signed Yamaha R6 which is up for sale to try and raise as much cash as possible for the Teenage Cancer Trust, you can see it on display in the showroom at Mucklows Hill in Halesowen, with directions here.
Have a top week my amigos, I will blog back after the big one, Man U vs. Barca on Wednesday night which should prove to be one of the best games of footy ever, with my heart saying the flair and skill of Barca will win out, but my head saying the experience and mentality of United will come through......either way I can't wait......now where are my painkillers??
