The Beautiful game, Bank Holiday Fun and the greatest film of all time!
Hello all, I hope you had a top Easter weekend, and apologies for lack of blog over the last couple of days but I did something over the weekend I haven't done for about 6 months............and that was to take a day off to go and see my family at Easter.
It was great to see them for the first time properly since my brothers 40th (he wont thank me for reminding him how old he is!) and it was a classic Wilkins get together, with good chat, good food and his amazing dogs, Hannibal (above) and Maisey (below) who as you can see have decided to take over the table and Sofa in his kitchen!
Yes none of this fair weather radio presenting for Wilkins, I'm hardcore, I didn't even take a day off over Christmas, and I truly subscribe to the theory that "lunch is for wimps"..........honest. To be fair I don't care about having time off because as you can probably guess I love my job, but it was so nice to head back home and see my family and friends, indulge in some awesome food and get "The sweats" by eating too much of my mum's fruit salad..........well as my brother pointed out, if you don't eat it all, she will just take it home!
I did make a school boy error though, as I rode the latest subject of The Motorcycle Diaries back home with the liberating feeling of only a tiny backpack to slow me down, without thinking about the fact that it was Easter and that I might have to carry back my huge haul of eggs...........D'oh!
Try as I might I couldn't mould the chocolate to form a dairy milk crash helmet to allow me to transport them back home, although as my mum pointed out this probably wouldn't have been very legal, so I ended up having to leave them all back in Surrey.................Dagnabbit, oh well you live and learn!
Being back home I did manage to catch some of the extraordinary sporting action that the Easter break provided us with, Heineken Cup rugby (Go on the Tigers!), crucial Premiership, Championship and League One matches, the disappearance of Luton from the Football league and of course Angel Cabrera winning a thrilling US Masters out at Augusta.
One thing about that, I watched one piece on it after the result, and all it seemed to focus on was the waistline of the players, instead on the incredible action that was taking place, with every comment a snide remark about how fat so and so was compared to Tiger. Look its golf, I don't care if they walk around the course eating cake and drinking gravy if the play is off as high a standard as it was over the tournament.
I would have loved to have seen Tiger win, and he came mighty close, but in the end it was the 48 year old Argentinian who held his nerve to take an amazing victory, and deservedly so.
If that Masters wasn't nail biting enough for you, I hope you filled your boots last night with Chelsea vs. Liverpool in the Champions League...........wow what a game! I mean I expected it to be more open than the corresponding fixture last year, but who could have foreseen such a topsy turvy game, adrenaline filled and dramatic game.
As a neutral it was great to watch, and both teams deserve credit for the way they went at each other, but Stevie G and Rafa's boys simply left themselves too much to do from the first leg, and Guus Hiddinks half time talk will be the stuff of legends from now on.
Oh I also see that Andy Flower has got the England cricket coaching job, good luck to him I say, he seems like a top bloke and was an amazing player, plus I met his brother Grant in a Kebab shop on Epsom High Street once at 2am on a Monday morning, and he was a legend!

I was back training with the Birmingham & Solihull Bee's this week, after 3 weeks off with a niggling knee injury, and it was great to be back amongst the squad as they prepare for their crucial match away at Tyndale this weekend, where a win would put them one game away from winning the league and gaining guaranteed promotion to National One, with two left to play.

I have got to do some really rather cool things in my life, and I truly count myself extremely lucky, but getting to train with these boys, a fully pro side and one of the best teams in the business, is just amazing, I have to keep pinching myself..........well actually I don't they do that for me, if by pinching you mean kicking me in the head! This week I took great pleasure in winding the lads up after I beat them in a few light-hearted training games (wheel barrow races using barbells for wheels, massive tractor tyre rolling and beer barrel chucking), reminding them that I am an old unfit radio presenter and that they are professional athletes..........although that ended pretty quickly when we started playing some touch and I was blowing out of my arse after about 10 seconds!
Joking aside, you get a real feeling for the differences between a good semi pro side and a team like the Bee's in training, not only are the skill, aggression and commitment levels that much higher, but the pace of the game and individual players is scary, you make one mistake (or many like I do!) and that's it, they're a speck of dust on the try line horizon!
Oh and I would like to say that after weeks of running around not being able to see the ball due to my long hair, I finally took the plunge and wore an "Alice Band" while playing yesterday, although after doing so I realised I no longer had an excuse for dropping the ball, but luckily it was okay because I looked so debonair and cool that no one noticed............yeah right.
I can't make training tonight as I am on air, but I will be back with them next week full time again, which is handy as it will probably take me that long to recover from the last session!
It wouldn't be a blog if I didn't plug the Kerrang/Streetbike Yamaha R6 signed by loads of Kerrang Bands that we are auctioning off to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, you can bid on it here and above is a picture of Billy and Charlotte from the Subways with the bike!
I must admit I have enjoyed the last week on the Yamaha M800 Intruder, as I have never ridden a prettier machine, and the whole time I was on the back of it I just felt like Jack Nicholson in Easy Rider..........well minus the LSD! Honestly, I don't really know what "Cool" is as a concept, I have never tried to be cool, and probably never will be, but somehow this retro looking bike seemed to make me feel like the coolest man on the planet.

Unfortunately the photographic evidence seems to support the theory that it is actually just the bike that is cool, not me as I am just the geeky git sitting on the back of it, as you can tell from the photo above, but hey, being "Cool" by proxy is close enough for me.
You can read my review of the machine and what I got up to on it here, and this week's see's a complete change as I am riding a Triumph Daytona Speed 675, which simply put is a pure track bike you can take on the road...............three words for you so far..........OH MY GOD!!!
I'll post the results of my week on it up on Friday, also this week you can catch me on the evening show filling in for Christian & Loz from 7-10pm until Thursday, as well as my usual 3-5am new music show, Saturday afternoons sport and music extravaganza from 1-5pm Offside, Sunday Brekky from 6-10am and of course Luke @ Lunch on Q radio from 1-3pm Mon-Friday.........yes I get about a lot, like a bad smell.
Oh one other thing, I was around my good friend Johnny Doom's house from the Late License and Temple of Doom shows on Kerrang the other day and we watched what has to be the greatest move of all time, The Wanderers. Made in 1979 but set in 1960's New York, it has everything, gangs, fights, sexy women, cars and American Football in what must be one of the best coming of age films ever and what an amazing soundtrack......................check it out!
Right you lot, I'm off to enjoy the new bike in the sun and hit the gym, I will blog back later in the week, so until then my amigos!
