Come on the boys, the return of God and why I feel like Ewan Macgregor!

By Luke Wilkins on Apr 1, 09 05:41 PM

So England versus the Ukraine is on tonight, in what is being billed as a crucial qualifier for Capello and his boys, but then again I think the last time an England qualifier for a World Cup wasn't crucial was............well before Jules Rimet was born!

More of the same please lads.jpg

Both unbeaten so far in the group, this match should prove a much sterner test than Slovakia did for Rooney et al when they meet at Wembley this evening, but having said that I reckon our boys should come out on top. Sure we may have about as many fit strikers as an empty box of matches, but with Gerrard and Lampard suddenly realising they can both play on the same pitch without falling over each others shoelaces, and Rooney discovering that if Colleen keeps his toys locked up at home, then there is less chance of him throwing them out of the pram, I think this is a national team we can start to be proud of.

Also they are actually bothering to play for their national team instead of just turning up and running on the pitch in a bid to improve there bragging rights down the local nightclub later. Seriously, Cappello is doing a top job, the players are responding, and I for one cant wait for the game tonight hopefully 3-0..........cue the pundits curse and watch them now go and lose it 8-0!

Shearer as he was then when he was at Saints.jpg

Oh and who else woke up this morning and thought that Shearer managing Newcastle was an Aprils Fool???? God, as he is known on Tyneside, is officially taking over for the last few games of the season, which is perfect for the big man. If they go down, he can say he didn't have enough time and either walk away or rebuild them in the Championship learning his trade along the way next year, or if he keeps them up, he is an instant hero and has a job for life. One thing is for sure, he will at least instil a bit of pride into the current squad, and let them know just what it means to the Geordies to be wearing that shirt, something that has been missing from the Newcastle side since.......well......shearer retired, and I am really looking forward to his press conferences with all the media experience he has!

Gavin Henson aka tart.jpg

Something that made me sad today is the news that Gavin Henson is thinking of retiring from rugby after his latest ankle injury that has ruled him out of the Lions tour. Now think what you might of Henson (Git, tart, numpty, Sicknote, Welsh........are all things that spring to my mind) but there is no doubt he is one of the most talented players the welsh team has seen for years, and he has been at the forefront of their resurgence as an international force...well except for when he was being a git, a tart, a numpty, a Sicknote etc and if he does carry through with his threat it will be sad day for all.

The worst part for me is that it makes you realise how depressing getting an injury must be to world class athletes, they train so hard day in, day out, and then just when things seem to be going okay through no fault of their own they are out of action for weeks at a time. Although his recent rant has put in to perspective the professionalism and patience of a certain Johnny Wilkinson!

I should know (I love putting myself in the same bracket as Henson..........although I do use less hair product!), I have had an injury for the last two weeks which has kept me from training with the Bee's............a nasty case of split ends.............seriously..........I cant go out on the pitch looking like this!! Nah my injuries have been through my own doing after doing my Max's on dead lifts and squat's the last couple of weeks in the gym. I simply felt something in my knee last week, and this week after doing my legs, my ham strings felt like they had detached from the bone, (they hadn't - that would be uber bad!) with the difference being a young Luke would have continued to train until I made the injury worse and was out for weeks. Nowadays of course I am much wiser, and also slightly, but only slightly less stupid, so when something flares up I realise it's a sign to take it easy and rest for a few days, then you don't have to miss half as much game time.

Well it's that or I'm just getting old !!!

I am not DJ'ing Gatecrasher like normal on a Wednesday for the next 3 weeks as it's the students Easter Break, although I will be helping out Johnny Doom in Worcester at the Velvet Lounge tomorrow from 10pm if you fancy popping down for a night of indie, rock, metal and cheap drinks.

Also tomorrow we have Fightstar and In Case of Fire in for a Live at Kerrang, which should be ace, as they are two bands I absolutely love. I will get them both to sign the R6 which will be getting auctioned off now on eBay starting on Friday 10th April!

Now come on England!!!

Oh and if you are wondering why I feel like Ewan Macgregor, it has nothing to do with a new hairstyle, or me not buying a round for the last year (he is Scottish!), but in fact that I am now riding around on this beauty for the next entry in The Motorcycle Diaries, Yamaha's XT660 Tenere.........it just makes me want to go adventuring...so here is my best adventuring pose!

Im pointing the way to adventure.jpg
