It's a Mad Mad World!

By Luke Wilkins on Feb 11, 09 07:22 PM

Tony Adams..........hard to believe he once wnet out with Caprice huh!So we are only half way through the week, and already I have been absolutely gobsmacked about what has happened in the increasingly mad world of football that the sport seems to inhabit!

First up, Tony Adams getting sacked by Pompey after only 3 minutes in charge is a real shame I feel, with young English managers struggling to make an impact in the Premiership (especially after the whole Paul Ince debacle) it is sad to see one of the nicest, honest, and hardest working people in the sport booted out of his job. Don't get me wrong, I understand that as a manager you are judged on results, but consider that Pompey should have beaten Liverpool on Saturday and were only denied by a last minute Torres goal, and when you take into account that before the game he was given the complete support of the board it just shows you how unlucky he was.

Take that as a warning managers if the board say they are you behind you, run for the hills baby! Ah well, two wins out of 16 was simply not good enough in the end, but it was disheartening to hear how upset Adam's was, not only at the abuse he was getting from his home fans, but at how much pressure he was under from the start, he didn't seem happy that's for sure.

Now you know where Ronaldo got his wink from...Bye bye Big Phil!

Ah well, before I could even shed a tear for the Ex-Gooner Legend, news came through that Scolari had been sacked by Chelsea........the man they had spent ages trying to get, and lured him finally from Portugal as probably the most successful manager around after an amazing stint with Brazil when he won the World Cup...but were they happy with him??? No, he is sacked, and his replacement for a few months is going to be Guus Hiddink.....no doubt a legend, but it will be interesting to see how he deals with managing one of the biggest clubs in the world and Russia at the same time...........although it helps having Russia's owner as your best mate..................I mean Chelsea's owner.....whoops!

So should he have been given more time, personally I feel yes, I mean when Ferguson started at Man Utd 75 years ago, he almost got sacked within the first few months, and just imagine the world of football if that had happened. Man United would be rubbish (Awesom-o), we wouldn't have the term "Hair Dryer Treatment", we wouldn't have heard of such players as Eric Cantona and Roy Keane, and the build up to big matches and title run ins would be sooooooo boring without all of his mind games (although Rafa might not mind - or Keegan for that matter!)!

To be honest, I am gutted about Scolari going, as I loved his honesty which was so refreshing for once, and his general attitude was ace, you just feel that he inherited a lot of players from previous managers who didn't fit his style of play. Surely they should have given him a couple of seasons to get his team firing, but that's not what footy is about now; forget the long haul, its like modern society in its hunger for instant results.

Sod it, sack all the managers, let the fans pick the side via the web like Ebbsfleet United, or via a group on Facebook of even have a competition where the person who builds the most successful team on Footy Manager (the game!) gets to manage Chelsea, as you do kind of feel that half of it comes down to luck! My mate has taken Team Bath all the way from the Blue Square Conference South to the Championship in just four seasons, spending no money and only buying players on a free...........now that's class, although in this time he has forgotten to eat, see his fiancé or breathe, but it's a high pressure job being a manager, even an imaginary one!

One manager whose job should be safe for a few weeks yet is a certain Fabio Capello and I can't tell you how happy I am to have him manager of our national side right now. Take his attitude to tonight's "friendly" with Spain, as he puts its "There simply are no friendlies in football!" awesome-o, hopefully that means that there will be no repeat of the 95 halftime subs debacle we were put through with Eriksson.
Scoring for his country, go on my son!
I like Capello and you can't help but hope that he plays Beckham tonight to allow him to set the new caps record. I don't say this on the back of sentimentality, but on the basis that Beckham is playing amazingly right now in one of the best leagues in the world, and you can not ignore how he has turned his fortunes around since his lucrative yet misguided move to the LA Galaxy. Here is a man so driven by his desire to play for his national team he is happy to turn his back on £250k a week.....although to be fair I doubt AC Milan would pay him in pork scratchings. I hope he gets it, and no matter what you think of the man, you have to admit he has probably been THE player of our generation.

So prediction for tonight?? I'm going with a 2-1 to England, as I feel under Capello we have the discipline and belief to beat the number 1 ranked team in the world, so let's hope the boys can do it!!!

On a personal note, I was back at Tamworth Snowdome last night "shredding" with the best of them and have now got to the point with my snowboarding that I enter a Zen like state that allows me to forget everything else in the world.......well that's my excuse for hitting people when I lose control anyway!
The only time I have liked Skiers.................
Although I am truly a boarder now, as it took me a whole 15 minutes of boarding on my own last night to utter the clichéd words "Goddamn Skiers" as those slow pokes on two blades kept getting in my way! Yes it's the last stage of being a boarder, forget your flipside 180 donkey grabs, jumping over moguls or even riding the box, an irrational hatred of skiers is the only sign you have really made it!

I mean really at one point I actually came round the corner on the fastest part of the slope to find 5 of them, in the apex, just sitting and having a chat.......................crazy skiers!!!

Anyway, hatred aside, I'm off to play some guitar while I watch England trounce Spain, and then I'm heading off to Gatecrasher to DJ till 3am, come down you crazy kittee kats!

Also you can catch me on Kerrang filling in for The Wench Emma Scott until next Friday from 11am-3pm, playing the best in rock and entertaining you with my witty banter..........God help us all!!!

And I will be writing a preview to the weekends sporting action on Friday, including a look ahead to England vs. Wales in the rugger...which we will lose......more on Friday - until then Muchacho's, be good and love one another!
