Ashley Young, Eboue, De La Hoya and Black Stone Cherry

By Luke Wilkins on Dec 11, 08 04:33 PM

Firstly, massive apologies for the lateness of the blog but wow, what a week!

I won't go into too much detail, but I just watched Black Stone Cherry do an awesome Live at Kerrang gig and then afterwards got to meet Mike Byrne, the ex-London Irish and Munster back row!

What a top day, but a busy one!

Right, now I've got some name-dropping out the way, I want to start with saying 'Well done Villa!'

Martin O'Neill must have read my blog last week (well, we are very good friends now...honest!), when I said that they have all the ingredients to be one of the best teams around, except that they seemed to lose focus in the games against the not so glamorous teams, and that was costing them dear.

So when Everton equalised against them on Sunday at Goodison in extra time, Mart must have thought "Here we go again!" but wow, what a response from Ashley Young.

It was only this week that Martin was saying at the Euro press conference, when asked about whether he would buy someone in January, said: Well I bought Ashley Young last time round, and I thought £8.3 million was a lot for him then, but he has turned into a world class player and is probably worth four times that now."

I swear he has a crystal ball!

Anyway I was happy as Arsenal lost again, but what was Eboue playing at? Brought on as a sub having been out for six weeks through injury, he did his best to gift Wigan an equaliser until, having no choice, Wenger had to replace him!

Honestly, I don't care how good a player everyone says Eboue is. His attitude the whole time at Arsenal has been atrocious, from his diving, bad sportsmanship, and just overall attitude. I for one would love to see him go in the January transfer window.

Maybe we could see if Mart would be nice enough to sell us Young.... yeah right!

There were two great boxing matches at the weekend, too, with Carl Froch finally getting the attention he deserves after beating Juan Pascal in one of the finest boxing matches ever held on these shores.

Wow, talk about neither fighter taking a backwards step! Not only can they both hit, but their chins were as solid as Mount Everest!

I normally like my fights to end with a knockout (or a double knockout a la Rocky!), but even I wanted this to go the distance as it was just so entertaining.

So will he fight Calzaghe next?

I doubt it, Joe might not get back into the ring, but if he does I am sure it will be in Cardiff against one of the American greats he has already beaten, because that's who everyone wants to see him fight.

Also, why would he put his reputation on the line against a guy who is hungry, one of the hardest hitters around, and much younger. He would be mad to risk it.

He even went as far to say, when asked if he would fight Carl Froch, "Carl who?"

The second fight was between Ring magazine's best pound for pound fighter in the world at the moment (some would say all time) Manny Pacquiao and an absolute legend of boxing who has won 10 world titles at 6 different weights, Oscar De La Hoya.

It was a shame they couldn't have met while De La Hoya was in his prime, because at 35, he realised afterwards, that while his boxing brain is just as sharp as ever, his body is just not up to it, and he was dominated by the devastating and awesome technique shown by the man from the Philippines.

Sad as it is to see the demise of De La Hoya (although he should not feel bad - he gave his all!), I am more excited about the possible match up of Pacquiao against Hatton, which many feel, including me, could be one of the greatest boxing matches of all time. Here's hoping it happens sooner rather than later!

Right, I am off to get ready to DJ some filthy scuzzy rock music and get myself mentally prepared for the Kerrang Xmas party.

It's going to hurt, especially as I have to be on air at 3am the next day, and when you consider the last time I was at Kerrang party I was found 3 weeks late, wandering around the valleys of Wales trying to sell my moustache hairs for food....

Ah, those were the days!!!!

Don't forget to listen to my shows during the week. I'm on 3am-5am and Offside on Saturday from 1pm-5pm.

Next week I will be chatting to England and Worcester Vikram Solanki on the show, about what it's like to play test cricket in India.

Peace out!
