Aston Villa vs West Brom, Brazilians and those pesky tigers

Sunday afternoon, 2pm, and I settled down to watch my first Baggies vs. Villa match since moving to Birmingham, and I wasn't disappointed! I had heard of the passion involved in this game, and it was great to see first hand how much it means to the fans, players, and especially the managers, as Marin O Neill resembled a kangaroo on steroids with the amount of jumping up and down he did on the sidelines.
The fans created an incredible atmosphere within the Hawthorns, and with Villa playing their 3rd game in 5 days, an upset was on the cards, but it was not meant to be as the naivety of centre back Leon Barnett cost the Baggies the game.
I feel sorry for Barnett, he wasn't due to play until Meite injured himself in the pre game warm up, but there is no excuse for his terrible marking that led to Carew's goal, and I can think of better players to pass the ball to unmarked about 20 yards from goal than Agbonlahor.
Credit though to West Brom for fighting to get back into the game, and Morrison's goal was no more than they deserved, but it has to be said, Villa are very much looking like a team that will seriously challenge for the Champions League places, while the Baggies do not look like a side destined for trouble - yet!
And as for Man Utd vs. Chelsea, honestly, I have never seen a bigger display of handbags at dawn than from Ferguson's men. They are complaining that they got 7 yellow cards (mostly for dissent), when really if you asked me they should have had a couple sent off.
Sure, the referee sometimes gets things wrong, but the whole point of the Respect campaign, is that you have to be a man, accept the referees decision as final and get on with the game.

Frankly I found Ferdinand, Rooney and Ronaldo's attitude towards the ref disgusting, and the petulance on show was similar to that on show in a game of footy when I go round my nephews house, in fact, that is unfair on my nephews, who at the age of 4 and 5 have a much better grasp of sportsmanship than any of the Man Utd Players or coaching staff.
And I am sorry, Ronaldo should simply never complain for any cards he gets, as his blatant displays of diving (some were ridiculous) should result in him being booed by his own fans, personally I would hate to have a player like that in my team - unless of course he did decide to join Arsenal, then I would probably forgive him and worship the ground he walks on!
Seriously though, this respect campaign towards refs is hilarious, as all the big clubs seem to back it, until they themselves are involved in a big game! Managers and players should take note of Big Phil Scholari's attitude, after the game when interviewed, asked if he thought Chelsea should have had a penalty, he simply said "Of course not, the referee hasn't given it, so it isn't one, end of story!"
Honestly if I see a manager moan about a ref again, I might send him a letter to explain the fact that moaning will never change anything and that once a ref has made his decision he can't change his mind anyway, so what's the point?
Wow - rant over, what about the game? Well United don't seem at the races, and I reckon if Deco had been in that creative midfielder position instead of Mikel (Deco was another one who injured himself in the warm up), it would have been a much different story, but as it was, a draw was probably a fair result. As for the others, well Arsenal looked amazing once more, passing the ball around like the Harlem Globetrotters, and thankfully remembering to score this time.
More importantly a quick glance at the table shows the Mighty Gooners top, while Tottenham are in 20th, a position they deserve after another lacklustre performance against Wigan - hahahahahahahahahahaha!
While Liverpool drew at home to Stoke (a result which using school ground logic, means they are better than Man Utd who lost at Anfield last week!), the big story of the weekend has to be Man City's emergence as the Brazil of the North West, and serious title contenders.
Portsmouth are no mugs, but they were made to look like statues against the incredible swagger of the Brazilians Elano, Robinho, Jo and Wright-Phillips-o, in fact I have to say that is some of the best football I have ever seen in the Premiership, and what a great choice for Shaun WP to go back to his old club, as it looks like the players he is surrounded by will bring out the best in him for club, and hopefully England.
It also goes to highlight a point I made the other week, confidence is contagious, and you could visibly see the effect the Brazilian superstars were having on other members of the team, with Stephen Ireland looking world class, and setting up most of the goals!
All I can say is that I can't wait to see what next week's premiership action has in store, as I think this could be the best season for a long while yet, but of course if I could see it end now with the teams in the current league positions - I would take it!

Now onto the Ryder Cup, one of the greatest sporting events in the world, and I don't even play golf that much! I stayed up late on Sunday to watch the singles matches, even if it did turn out to be a bit of a damp squib in the end, with the USA whooping and hollering themselves to an easy win.
Although it must be said, I haven't seen as partisan a crowd as that since the Nuremburg Rally. Honestly, shouting "Get in the hole!" every time your player takes a shot is just ridiculous........of course there trying to get it in the hole, it's like screaming "Bowl him out!" every ball at a cricket match!
Although I must admit, I thought the fans were awful when they were booing the European players, at one point it almost made my stomach turn, until I realised they were actually just cheering for Boo Weekley (what a redneck he is!) in a similar way they used to chant for Mart Pooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom for years in the footy.
Anyway, as a result, I don't think you can blame Faldo, as most of the Europeans just didn't turn up, and perhaps in the future the Captain should get to pick all of the team by himself, getting rid of the whole order of merit, because it's not often the guys at the top who are playing the best at that point. I just hope that when they come here in 2 years time we can show them how to act at sporting events, and don't try and get carried away by outdoing the yank fans, well either that or lets at least have a fight, that might make watching 12 hours of golf a bit more fun!
This brings me onto the Davis Cup, possibly the most pointless tournament in the world, by taking an individual sport and trying to make it a team game. Why? What's the point? Sure they should be proud to represent their countries, but it has no effect on their actual day job, so most of the players don't turn up either!
And its bit unfair when you have one world class player in your team a la Murray, as then poor sods like Bogdanovich, who look like they would prefer to be in the stands than actually playing, have to try and match their efforts, which is like asking a non league footballer to play for England.
Although I feel the whole tournament is vindicated by the amazing football chants, that much to my surprise, were ringing out around the All England Lawn Tennis Club, maybe the fans had been watching the Ryder Cup?
As for the rugby, I said it last week; please can the excellent Toby Flood and the Leicester Tigers win by more than two points in each game, so that I avoid chewing my nails down to the bone. I don't know if the Leicester boys read this blog, but if they do, spot on lads, another win at the weekend -19-17 against Worcester, and the way game ended, I swear they are trying to send me to an early grave!
But with 3 wins out of 3, and top of the table, things are looking good for the Tigers, which is something that can't be said about Wasps. They have lost all three games and its only their losing bonus points that keep them above Bristol at the bottom, since the departure of Dallaglio, they have simply looked rudderless, but as much as I enjoy seeing them do badly as Leicester's biggest rivals, surely they have too much quality to be hanging around there for long?

Music wise this week see's the release of two simply amazing albums, firstly you have to buy Only by the Night by the Kings of Leon, it's a dark, melodic brooding album , that will take you places, and also throw you around the room by the scruff of your neck, it's simply breathtaking! The other choice this week is the second effort from one of my fave bands Cold War Kids, it's called Loyalty to Loyalty, and it offers up some eclectic, at times foot stomping tunes, but with always with an unpredictable edge. This is the follow up to their amazing 2006 album Coward & Robbers, and trust me, if it's possible it's even better!
On a personal note I am enjoying a few days off this week, after doing Emma Scott's show last week, as well as attending the launch of Gatecrasher, the JinkyLinks Charity Golf day (The guys raised thousands for the Teenage Cancer Trust - a big thanks to them for digging deep in their pockets and for putting up with my terrible auctioneer skills!), and of course KerrangFest, it's going to be nice to spend some time in the gym, and listening to music, as well as launching my first DJ night here in Birmingham on Wednesdays at Dragon Eye on Broad Street.
Unfortunately it's a student only gig, so unless you have no idea what soap, vegetables or taxes are, I won't be seeing you there!
Ah well - bring on the next weekends sporting action, and catch me filling in for Kate Lawler for a week starting Friday on drive time (4-7pm) as well as of course the amazing Offside show from 2-6pm on Saturday!
