Taste of Birmingham show leaves sour taste in my mouth

By Glynn Purnell on Jul 11, 08 10:37 AM

Once again the Taste of Birmingham has arrived.

Yippee.... (!)

I know that this event is meant to be great for Birmingham but personally I find it irritating.

This is purely because it is supposed to be about Birmingham and food.

But unfortunately it is like the G8 summit - full of politics and bulls**t.

This does nothing to raise the profile of what Birmingham is truly about.

More to the point, it is run by outsiders.

I have worked in Ludlow and they organise a couple of food festivals themselves yearly. As the so-called Second City, Birmingham is not capable of doing so.

Why, I ask myself?

As people know, I am very proud of my city and get very offended when it is criticised. But this festival just shows the "holes" we've got in Birmingham and a lack of co-solidarity

When you've got two fat old chefs that are dragged from the f*****g telly fronting the festival, it is no wonder that people are taking the p**s.

I also feel that the event is overpriced for what you get initially.

These people roll in, take the money and f**k off. There is a lack of class and honesty to the whole thing.

Please, let us as Brummies pull ourselves together.

Let's join in unity and do our own festival.

We can do it right while raising the profile of our beautiful multi-cultural city, and show the rest of the country Birmingham is a place to drive to, not through.

Cheers chief!

Couldn't agree more with you, mate. Brum has much more to offer than I saw at the event on Thursday night. Well done on winning the Newcomer of the Year award, but I don't suppose you'll be greatly impressed by that. Reckon you should be in charge of the next one.

Twelve quid just to get in and look round some tents in a field, and then you have to pay for your food on top. Someone's making a fortune out of this one. Five of us went - we should have spent the money on a decent meal instead.

My mate went to the one in London and she said it was absolute rubbish! But she had to pay £25 for the privilege and then a tenner for each dish.
I gave it a miss this year cos it really is a rip off.

Well, if we think we can do better then we'd better get out there and organise something then. Its no good just complaining about what Taste doesn't do. And its no good waiting for our Council to get off their backsides and do something about it, because they won't.

If Glynn is willing to organise the fine dining part then we'd be willing to organise a Farmers' Market as part of the event...

But lets stop complaining and start doing.

Totally agree. Waste of money and merely a money making exercise for the Londonders behind it

Politics indeed. With a number of media outlets brought onboard, notably the Post and Mail, the hymnsheet doing the rounds was never less than ecstatic with the months leading up to the event peppered with spurious 'stories' about the forthcoming shindig. Since my less than wholesome first encounter with TOB I have determined to list the dates and the award winers but otherwise refrain from giving publicity to something that, in broad agreement with Mr Purnell, I believe to be poor value and of little benefit or relevance to the diners and restaurateurs of Birmingham. I've long advocated to all who'll listen (including Mr Purnell) that the Taste It event that was rolled into Arts Fest one year was the starting point for a food festival that permeated the city centre. A combination of free or subsidised small plates from city centre restaurants served inside or outside their premises along with a food market and demonstrations would place food and eating out at the centre of the city where it actually belongs.

I'd be happy to support something with more local focus, lower costs, something focusing on our fantastic local cuisine - as the heart of the country we can enjoy the freshest that England and Wales has to offer. It would be great to promote the idea of eating out in fine dining establishments - too many people think they're out of their league but you can get the veggie menu at Simpsons for £20, cheaper than a large pizza and pudding at Pizza Hut!

Whilst I agree with your sentiment that Brummies should run the Taste of Brum
rather than outsiders, I think your bad language detracts from your argument and certainly doesn’t leave the reader with the impression that there is anyone in Birmingham with the nonce to organise the show.

As for your cheap shot about other TV chefs…that smacks of jealousy, if you wish to deride someone you should base your derision on facts not that they are either fat or old because your definitely going to be old one day yourself, lets hope up and coming chefs don’t call you a has been.

I just went to the opneing of the Birmingham 2009 event. Its £12 to enter and you dont actually get anything for that. The food cost £10 a dish and isnt actually that special! what i dont understand is why you have to pay to enter, i understand that the food costs money but why would you pay to get in? total and utter waste of time and money!
