Old age: just a fault?

Apparently there's now a 'cure' for grey hair. Scientists have discovered a protein, known as 'wnt' that is the key to keeping your hair colour as well as stimulating hair growth.... I bet Rooney wished he'd known that before getting needles poked into his head to transplant a bit of hair onto that balding scalp of his!

Researchers from New York University's Medical Centre apparently reported that 'wnt' causes a chain of reactions that lead stem cells to produce the pigment that gives your hair its colour. And it's thought that by boosting your levels of the protein, the chance of going bald and grey thins... as opposed to your hair.

The researchers reckon they haven't discovered whether it's a fault in the pigment producing system that causes us to go grey yet, but hey, if they can create products that will boost the levels of the protein in our system then who cares right?

The cynic in me, I'm afraid, does have to question their use of the word 'fault' in this however. If going grey during our life cycle (as pretty much every person since the dawn of time who reached old age will have done) is a fault, what pray tell, are they going to say about our wrinkles, our depleting muscles, our weakening bones and our loss of marbles? Is aging then, just one great big 'fault'? Well... I suppose if you ask any botox injecting, body enhancing surgeon they would probably say yes to that. Because that's the shallow, image obsessed world we live in. Whatever happened to just enjoying your life? After all, have you never noticed that certain 'plastic' look about anyone who's been "enhanced" in any way?

I dare say we should all sit down with a glass of wine and watch 'Death Becomes Her'. Then we'll see if you want to stay young and live forever.
