London Fashion Week: Wear it all went wrong!

Would YOU like to look like this?

London Fashion Week has been and gone. We all now know what fabulous trends we are going to be wearing in about 8 months time and we're all oh so inspired right?
My plan last week was to bring you a round up of what I thought were the highlights of the A/W 2009 catwalk shows... but all you need to do is Google search 'London Fashion Week' and you'll find plenty of accounts from plenty of other people saying pretty much the same sort of thing. Job done - thanks guys!
So instead, just to add to all the doom and gloom of the economic crisis (oh how we all love hearing about THAT everyday), I'm going to tell you what was wrong with London Fashion Week! (OK - now don't stop reading yet).

So... the problem with London Fashion Week. Well, unless you actually understand how the fashion industry works, and how you're meant to interpret what you see on the catwalk, unfortunately you're going to be completely clueless - a little like a (male, non fashion following) friend of mine who remarked

" Fashion? How can you call THAT fashion? Who would wear a thing like that? It looks crap"
" Aaaaah, bless you. You wouldn't wear it like that in reality, you're meant to interpret it" I replied.

Needless to say he looked at me like I was an idiot.

Do you know what though... in a way he's totally right. Although producing a fashion show full of instantly wearable clothes would generally be pretty darn boring which is why no self respecting or big name designer generally does. But seriously, after checking out several of the photos from the numerous designers collections on londonfashionweek.co.uk, instead of being wowed by a few showstopping pieces, amazed at the drama and extravagance of others, and shocked at how daring some were, I was in some cases faced with ugly, androgynous 'creations' that wouldn't flatter Kate Moss never mind anyone with a normal amount of flesh on their bones.

I mean please, fashion is meant to be creative and expressive, yes, but if the inspiration designers are feeling lead to ensembles that resemble either

a) a bizarre art collection,
b) an ugly art students project or
c) Star Trek in a major depression

then quite frankly I for one don't really want to see it, let alone think that it's supposedly going to inspire my wardrobe in 8 months time. And before anyone decides to go giving me the whole
" Sweetheart, you really don't understand do you".. actually I do. But I also believe we should try and get away from ugliness on the catwalk.

Speaking of which, the other problem with Fashion Week: the models

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that the boundaries between male and female are blurring? They all appear to be becoming androgynous clones of each other (Meadham Kirchhoff demonstrates this. Mark Pugh demonstrates this...without trying to single anyone out) - that goes for men and women. The only way you can tell them apart is from the amount of hair on their legs. The women are being made uglier and the men more feminine. If any manage to be an exception they look like aliens, and both still appear to be aiming for size 0. And we're meant to add clothes that hang off them to our wish lists because..? They certainly don't inspire you to try anything out for size (we probably wouldn't fit one big toe in for a start).

So there you go. That's what was wrong with London Fashion Week.

On a lighter note, one BCU fashion student did become one of the 2 runners up for the student designer award, while the winner stemmed from Nottingham Trent University... so a big well done to those guys!

Oh dear, poor love. Only a couple of weeks ago you were heralding London as the only stylish place worth tottering in your Louboutins and now, shock horror, you are bemoaning its lack of style at LFW.
Perhaps Birmingham's shows actually stand up well in comparison, if only for the fact that the fashions you see on catwalks here are wearable and, in the most part, affordable.
Then again, as I have yet to see you at any major fashion event either here or in the capital one has to ask do you actually attend or it is more a case of googling from the comfort of the marketing department?

Well Said Style Guru! Looks like Sarah is one big walking Contradiction! I'd say she definitely googles! Maybe the Mercury should employ someone who actually knows about Fashion.

Style Guru, sweetie,my point is not to compare Birmingham to London here, but it's also not to jump on the 'LFW was great' bandwagon that a million other people have already done for me. My points were completely valid... unless you actually want to look like the model at the top of the page? Or starve yourself to the point of androgyny and emaciation?
Birmingham's 'wearable' fashion will be just the same as Londons (independent retailers partly exempt) because most shops in the Bullring or concessions in Selfridges, Debenhams and Harvey Nics will be selling pieces from the exact same ranges featuring in every other of those same brand stores up and down the UK... all of which will have been designed by or inspired by at least one or two designers ranges from LFW.

And Tracie... don't jump on the bandwagon before you actually my blog properly

Well I say good for you for actually saying what a lot of people think and not what all the sycophants in the fashion world say. Its about time LFW got real with their designs and with the people who portray them. Walking skeletons are no way attractive to the consumer and do not show the designs in a realistic way. More home truths from you Diva!!!!!!

Good work! Adding to my faves :)
