Harvey Nics and men's fashion blips

By Sarah Morris on Mar 20, 09 01:21 PM in Fashion

So last night I went along for Harvey Nichols Birmingham's exclusive fashion show... and I have to say how fantastic it was!

Complimentary champers constantly refilled by very polite staff...lovely bubbly! (Sorry - I couldn't resist saying that)

And oh yes, the clothes. They were great... in fact my unfortunately very expensive, extensive wish list has now become considerably more expensive and extensive. Note how I say 'wish' list here...

Jimmy Choo has always been a favourite when it comes to shoes, and he did not fail when it came to finding my perfect pair for this season; gladiator inspired, patterned, super heels. Simply divine!

Primarni take note please - I am credit crunched and need you to hurry up and recreate them...

D&G came up trumps with some fabulous little dresses and a very cool little short suit for the ladies. Sonia Rykiel wowed with some great slouchy jumper dresses, showing a bit of punk inspiration with a fluoro pink giant safety pin image on my personal fave and Diane Von Furstenburg's nautical-ish giant stripe dresses were an absolute delight, in particular a gorgeous flowing long one with a vibrant flash of colour down the back drapes.

I could actually go on and on... but it might get boring for you. I must first however, express my sheer delight in the presence of leopard print on everything from jackets, to blouses and floaty dresses, and the amount of vibrant colour that was on display.

Now for the men, aside from feeling like an incredible pervert because I was sat on the front row, right underneath the catwalk and was about 'bum' height to the models as they paused and turned right in front of me ( I almost couldn't look through the threat of blushing), I was left feeling a little deflated about the offerings for my male counterparts.

Now we all know that when it comes to fashion, men get the bum deal anyway because, whilst women can get away with pretty much anything from tight, short, long, loose, shorts, trousers, skirts etc etc etc, society is not so forgiving on men who decided to stray too far away from say, a slightly tighter pair of trousers than the rest of the guys surrounding them. The answer here seemed to be in the form of white jeans, which featured several times, or slimmer legged 'designer' joggers, which on anyone other than the non-existant-backsided male models would probably be none too flattering... on the other hand, if you like to show off the shape and size of your manhood to the general public then please, go right ahead.

The good points were a few quirky outfits compiled by slimfit shirts, skinny ties and slim knee length tailored or denim shorts, teamed with casual pumps, which if worn well would be a very fashion forward and stylish look... but overall, the outfits appeared generally the same as we would normally see anywhere else. Nothing that would scream '£100's more expensive than you' at the Topman equivalents we see wandering down the street everyday.

And apologies for repeating myself here, but white jeans on men? Two words - "Just wrong". That is of course my personal opinion - some of you may absolutely love them. But please - not for me.

As I said - all in all Harvey Nics, you pulled off a great night and the show ran smoothly (the odd slip on the heels by the female models - you'd never catch me doing a thing like that.. ahem!)... but please do just one thing for me next time and make the men's fashion a little more inspiring than jeans, T-shirts and leather jackets. I did LOVE the £635 slim fit thin horizontal striped Alexander McQueen cardigan though! I could definitely marry a man carrying that off (I'd also like to think it was a reflection on a healthy bank balance that likes to be lightened every once in a while... if you know what I'm saying... wink wink)

White jeans are fine for the 1960s look but they're terribly susceptible to grass stains...
