Bev Bevan: Jasper Carrott's best man and a choppy ferry trip with ELO
1963
Pretty busy week with Denny Laine and the Diplomats with gigs at the Shirley Annexe Youth Club, the Handsworth Plaza, the Staffordshire Volunteer Pub and Bishopstoke Memorial Hall in Southampton, plus an appearance on local TV on "Midlands Today".
1968
Some recording with The Move at Advision Studios in London, a gig at Leeds University and an appearance on BBC Top of the Pops to promote our new single "Fire brigade".
1969
Quite a week for The Move. A gig in Bristol then one at Streatham Ice Rink, which was Trevor Burton's last show with the band. Next day , his replacement, Rick Price made his debut, miming to "Blackberry Way" on the Manchester TV show "Discoteque". Rehearsals followed that, plus a meeting on a services on the M1 ,with our new manager to be, Peter Walsh.
1972
I was best man at Jasper Carrott's wedding to his bride Hazel Jackson, at Solihull Registry Office, followed by a meal at the Elysee restaurant and a reception at the Boggery Folk Club in Solihull.
1973
On a Scandinavian tour with ELO. A choppy 17 hour ferry trip from Harwich to Denmark and gigs in Arhus, Gothenberg and Copenhagen, before one in Stockholm, Sweden.
1974
Some recording with ELO at De Lane Lea Studios, plus gigs at Brunel University in Uxbridge, Sheffield University and Coventry theatre.
1976
On tour with ELO in North America. Rehearsals at Colombia Pictures Sound Studio and broke in a brand new, enormous drum kit, supplied by new sponsors "Slingerland Drums".
Flew to Vancouver to kick off the tour, then on to the state of Oregon and shows in Spokane, Portland and Eugene,
1977.
In Los Angeles with ELO. We appeared on America's top TV rock show "Midnight Special", along with Santana and Mary McGregor ( singing her massive US hit "Torn between two lovers"). Also a presentation of gold album awards at "Chasens" restaurant from United Artists Records for the "A new world record" album.
Flew from sunny LA to a cold Kansas City to play a sold out show to 10,000 people. Next morning we boarded a rather ancient turbo prop plane to fly to Lincoln, Nebraska and another sold out concert to around 8,000. Early morning flight the next day to do a show in Oklahoma City.
1978
In Australia with ELO. Two shows at the Festival Hall in Brisbane, then flew to Sydney and presentation party to receive gold and platinum records for the albums "A new world record" and "Out of the blue". Following night was a huge one, playing a concert to about 25,000 people at Sydney Racecourse. On then to play to another big crowd at a beautiful amphitheatre in Melbourne.
1980
I took part in a TV talk show in Manchester called "After Noon", along with The Supremes and musician and raconteur George Melly.
1982
Some Scandinavian gigs for ELO, starting in Oslo, Norway, where it was well below freezing. From there we flew to Sweden's capital Stockholm and plenty more snow around. Good show to around 8,000 people and Benny and Frida from Abba came to the show and came back to say hello afterwards. On then to Denmark and another sold out show at Copenhagen's Ice Palace.
1984
On tour in USA with Black Sabbath . Gig in Corpus Cristi in Texas, but poorly attended.
Drove to San Antonio and much better gig there to crowd of around 6,000. Day off the following day and we visited The Alamo, which was nothing like as impressive as I imagined it would be. Another drive across the enormous state of Texas , to Houston, and a show there in some cavernous and echo swamped sports arena..
2005
Gig for the Bev Bevan Band at The Jamhouse in Birmingham
2007
A "Brum Rocks Live" gig at Aston Wood Golf Club in Sutton Coldfield and a show with Bev Bevan's Move at Butlins in Minehead.
2008
Back to Minehead again to play another of those Butlins 60's Weekends..
