Bev Bevan reviews Paul Carrack at Birmingham Town Hall

PAUL Carrack, one of Britain's best ever singer-songwriters, made a triumphant return to Birmingham's refurbished Town Hall on Wednesday evening, putting on a superb two-hour show to an enthralled, capacity crowd.
This is no all-action, special effects, gimmicky show, just eight fine musicians playing great songs. The lighting could have been more inventive and the huge on stage projection screen was totally ineffective, but those criticisms aside, this was a terrific night's entertainment.
Paul's backing band of keyboards, sax, trumpet, guitar, bass and drums entered the stage in black suits, white shirts and black ties, reminiscent of The Blues Brothers - minus the sunglasses, whilst backing singer Lindsay Dracass looked gorgeous n black dress and red leather gloves.
Paul Carrack, also in a black suit, strolled out with acoustic guitar and launched into a couple of his newer compositions "Somewhere in your heart" and "I need you".
Switching to his more familiar keyboards, he performed another relatively unknown song "Satisfy my soul" before getting rapturous applause for the beautiful ballad "Eyes of blue".
Warming to an audience that was clearly loving every minute, Paul and his band gave renditions of two songs he had written especially for The Eagles, "I don't want to hear it anymore" and "Love will keep us alive".
A brand new song "If I didn't love you" was followed by the lovely Lindsay, who sang Bonnie Raitt's "Nick of time". It would be nice to see her featured more often in the show.
By this time the band were really beginning to cook and closed the first half with the funky "Better than nothing" and "There's no easy way out".
The second half of the show kicked off with the reggae-styled "Just for tonight", which immediately got the crowd on its feet (the rather demented guy next to me doing a very good impression of Ricky Gervais's Office dance routine).
From Paul Carrack's days as lead singer with Squeeze, we were treated to a version of "Tempted" and from his time with Mike and the Mechanics there were lovely arrangements of "Silent running", "Another cup of coffee" and "The living years".
Carrack solo songs "I need your love", "Love is thicker than water", "Nothing more than a memory", "I live on a battlefield" and "No doubt about it" were interspersed with The Searchers hit "When you walk in the room", blues standard "Ain't no love in the heart of the city" and Paul's first-ever hit, from his days with Ace, "How long".
A standing ovation brought on an encore of Marvin Gaye's "What's going on" and Mike and the Mechanic's "Over my shoulder", and the audience went home very happy indeed.
After the show I went backstage to visit my old friend Paul and his band, along with Blues legend Trevor Francis, Villa manager Martin O'Neill, B'ham manager Alex McLeish and British champion hairdresser Graham Lovsey.
And at midnight they all treated me to a rousing rendition of "Happy birthday to you"!
