BROODING teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson, who plays a tough vampire in the Twilight movies, has revealed he has a phobia - of CLOWNS.

The phobia began when the actor saw one burn to death as a child. "The first time I went to the circus somebody died," Pattinson (pictured)said.

"One of the clowns died. His little car exploded. Everybody ran out. It was terrifying."

The Twilight star shares his phobia with fellow actor Jonny Depp.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have an undeniable chemistry, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has revealed.

But the Twilight couple, who started dating after playing on-screen lovers Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, were warned by the film-maker about their romance because Kristen was only 17 at the time.

"I don't now what the laws were in England and so I just wanted to be sure he knew that we did have a law here," she said

Catherine, who helmed the first story in the Twilight Saga, said Red Riding Hood actor Shiloz Fernandez was a frontrunner for the role of Edward. "He was beat out by Rob because Rob and Kristen they just had that chemistry," she said.

Around 650 people headed for the Fifth Eternal Twilight Convention - paying up to £895 to spend time with their vampire idols.

The Stephenie Mayer books have been turned into three blockbuster Hollywood movies propelling the cast, including Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, into household names.

Yesterday some of the movie's other stars met their dedicated fans at The Hilton Metropole, at Birmingham NEC.

They included Michael Welch, aka Mike Newton, Daniel Cudmore, who plays Vampire Felix and Jodelle Ferland - 'newblood' Bree Tanner.

And followers had come from far and wide to meet their heroes, who mingled with them on Friday night.

Twilight lover Erika Einhaus, 39, had travelled to the convention from Virginia, America. She said: "I'm addicted to Twilight, so when I found out they were here, I had to come.

''I love them all.

"Last night we were dancing with Michael Welch!''

Cast members are also enjoying the thee-day convention which ends today.

Justin Chon, who plays Eric Yorkie, had earlier tweeted saying: "I'm in Birmingham. Where pints of Boddingtons flow all day long."

And Alex Meraz, better known as shapeshifter Paul, tweeted; "An amazing turn out here in Birmingham!

''It's really fun to see familiar faces."

As well as besotted Americans, the convention also attracted many Europeans, including a group of Belgians who met through their love of the series.

"There are 35 of us in Belgium, but only six have made it here," said Almudena Herrera, 25. "This is my third convention and I've been to the movie premieres in London, Paris and Barcelona.

''We all love the romance of the film, but also the vampires and werewolves.

''We saw Daniel Cudmore, who plays Felix, last night and he touched my friend's necklace!"

And French fanatic Elsa Andre, 27, said: "I've watched the films over 50 times. And the book helped me get through a hard time in my life, so it is important to me."

Wolverhampton girls Cathy Oliver, 19, and Katie Astles, 20, have been fans since the first books came out.

Cathy said: ''We love this convention and earlier met Alex Meraz - he is such a babe!

''He squeezed my hand and I practically died. We have been saving up since last year for the tickets."

Prices for the event start at £88 for a standard adult programme or £29 for children, but can reach £895 for a VIP ticket - which includes dining with the stars.

Taylor Lautner at 2009 Comic-Con International

TWILIGHT hunk Taylor Lautner has been stalked by almost as many Hollywood directors as teenage girls in recent months.

Now the wolfboy of the vampire franchise fame has finally fallen for the charms of action maestro Michael Bay, director of such classics as Transformers and Armageddon.

The dream team are said this week to have linked up for a project that is being touted as Mr & Mrs Smith meets Wanted.

The pair sent out a script on Tuesday night and by Wednesday morning a bidding war had already started.

Not much more is known about the planned film, except that the pair handpicked Jason Hall, who wrote the Ashton Kutcher/Anne Heche comedy Spread, to come up with the script.

At just 19, martial arts expert Lautner already has Hollywood slavering at his feet.

Vanity Fair named him the Sunset Strip's ninth highest-paid actor - thanks in part to a reported $7.5 million deal to star in the 3D Hasbro adpatation Stretch Armstrong.

And all this fame and fortune comes without him actually having headlined a film, unless you count The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D.

Up until now, Lautner has surfed the crestwave of the Twilight tsunami, but without the Robert Pattinson factor will he continue to be a teen-throb?

The jury is out until his first post-Pattie offering hits the big screen this September with the release of thriller Abduction.

He is also producing and starring in sci-fi fantasy Incarceron, in which he's likely to get to grips with Harry Potter hottie Emma Watson.

Bay is currently working on Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third in the franchise, while Lautner finishes Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt 2.

Bay co-owns Platinum Dunes, a production house specialising in horror film remakes, and his credits include The Rock, Pearl Harbor and the Bad Boys series.

Having played an ass-kicking superheroine and a vampire, actress Chloë Moretz has got two of cinema and TV's (current) most popular genres under her utility belt, and she is still only 13.
Chloë, whose impressive list of credits includes the 2005 remake of The Amityville Horror. (500) Days of Summer, Diary of a Wimpy Kid My Name Is Earl and Desperate Housewives, potty-mouthed her way to international attention courtesy of Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, based Mark Miller's comic book, in which she played pint-sized assassin Mindy Macready, aka Hit-Girl.

Kristen Stewart has revealed she went to a strip club to research her new role as a stripper - and got offered a job.

The 20-year-old Twilight star, who plays a 16-year-old sex worker befriended by grieving father Doug (James Gandolfini) in new indie flick Welcome To The Rileys, told The Sun how she went to research the role with director Jake Scott.

Kristen revealed: "I went to my first strip club and the guy was like, 'You have to come back later if you want a job' - they must have thought Jake was my pimp."

Robert Pattinson has revealed that he is a big fan of X Factor Supremo Simon Cowell and defended the music mogul against claims that he is rude.

He told Now magazine he thought Cowell, 50, had one of the best jobs going, he said: 'It would be one of the best things ever to get paid for handing out Simon Cowell-style insults for the day.

"I don't think he's rude, I think he's just painfully honest, which is what makes him so good.

"He must absolutely love his job, it can't be one you'd ever get bored with."

Peter Facinelli showed that he has a sense of humour after being named the "worst vampire" of all time.

The actor, who plays Dr Carlisle Cullen in The Twilight Saga, topped the Worst Vampires On Film And TV list in Rolling Stone magazine, while Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula was deemed Best Vampire.

"YES! I finally came in number one in something!" he tweeted.
Critic Peter Travers, who compiled the list, wrote that "Facinelli is a solid actor, but playing Carlisle Cullen, the white-haired head of the fang-challenged Cullen vampire family, he looks about as terrifying as Project Runway winner Austin Scarlett, whom Carlisle closely resembles."
