Red Dwarf : Craig Charles talks about season 10
Craig Charles says that the new series of Red Dwarf will be geared to a new generation of fans.
The 47 year-old star says he's been inspired by the fans at a series convention in Manchester and that, although the characters will be older and wiser, they'll be trying to get down with the kids.
"I just did the Red Dwarf convention in Manchester," he tells Anorak City.
"There were 11 and 12-year-old kids with DVDs for me to sign, and I was thinking 'God, you weren't even born when these were being filmed'.
"It's got to a whole new generation, and long may it continue.
"I don't know what the new series is going to be like exactly, but we'll try to make it as funny and relevant as possible."
He has, he admits, now been playing Lister for more than half his life.
"That makes me feel old!" he says. "But not to worry. I'm 47 now, but at least I haven't gone grey like the rest of them!
"Kryten's going to be a much wider robot than he used to be, and Cat wears a wig so you can't see his grey hair, and Rimmer, he'll need a touch-up!
"I hope the audience likes it. I like the idea of grumpy old men in space - I don't think it's been done before."
As to the plot, he remains tight-lipped.
"I'm sworn to secrecy," he says. "They don't like things getting out there, although details do seem to turn up.
"But I'm not at liberty to say anything!"
He has confirmed, however, that two new series are being produced, and that filming begins in November.
The idea is to broadcast season 10 (they've decided to leave a fictional season 9 in between to explain continuity collapse) in late 2012 on digital channel Dave.
And did we mention that Kristine Kochanski's back?
