Lost finale: On reflection

By Steve Wollaston on Jul 31, 10 07:12 PM

Thumbnail image for LOCKELOST.jpg

I watched the finale again yesterday.

That's the fifth time I have watched it and each time it gets that little bit more satisfying.

There are gigantic holes in the whole mythology of the show for sure but some of those holes I think were deliberately left there.

Let's not forget that the show used so many story narratives and for it to have lived up to the geek legend that was created around it would have been a very big task indeed.

Some of the characters we didn't get conclusions for or explanations for but in the grand scheme of things this really was a beautiful way to put a show to sleep.

That last episode was very clever, amazingly well filmed and acted and very profound. There was a sadness to the end of the show that was very hard to capture and I have to say the whole of Lost would have been a very different show without the stunning musical score by Michael Giacchino.

I can't wait for those extra minutes on the release of the series, we will of course be speaking in some depth about them.

We will also be running a petition I think to make sure Disney don't do anything else with the greatest tv show of all time!

Sci-fi shirt of the day

By Steve Wollaston on Jul 31, 10 06:51 PM

Well as promised we didn't manage to make this every day!

Let's call it a regular but sporadic new addition to Anorak City!

Anyway - today's shirt is a Star Wars one with a poker twist...

It is the ultimate meeting of the minds.

Dr Who and Sherlock Holmes.

Steven Moffat is the man behind both Matt Smith's Time Lord and Benedict Cumberbatch's 21st century sleuth.

He's writing and producing both shows, and both are part of the BBC Wales stable.

And our first look at Sherwood last weekend revealed the Great Detective taking cues out of the Matt Smith style guide.

All that manic energy. That gleeful enthusiasm. The twinkle in the eye.

So what more natural than a crossover episode, in which Sherlock teams up with the Doctor to solve a particularly puzzling crime?

Cumberbatch, a fan of Doctor Who, says that he would be interested in appearing as a main or recurring character on the show.

And back in 2008 he turned down the chance to take over from David Tennant as the Eleventh Doctor, paving the way for Matt Smith's marvellous turn.

Doctor Who executive producer Moffat, has already revealed that he will write five episodes for the next series of the show scheduled for broadcast in 2011.

There'll be 13 episodes, and here at Anorak City our money is on a Sherlock sensation.

The 48 year old writer also admitted that between Doctor Who and his new show Sherlock, he hasn't been enjoying much of a work-life balance.

"The last year has been extraordinary," he said. "I've had about four days off, and that includes Christmas day. I work every weekend, I get up early in the morning, I go to bed late at night. There is no way of balancing it.

"It's extraordinary, but it's great fun too! Great fun, so long as it doesn't kill me!"

In what is planned to be a daily feature here on Anorak City but most certainly won't be, we take a look at the coolest sci-fi/movie t-shirt of the day.

So let's start this off with Darth Vader forgetting his batteries...

Firefly: 1980

By Daniel Smith on Jul 29, 10 10:52 AM

What if Firefly was created back in the Eighties? Maybe if it was it wouldn't have got cancelled!

Fans might have noticed someone was missing. That's because he has his own show...

The IMDB Project - The launch

By Jaymeetee on Jul 29, 10 09:30 AM

Hi guys, welcome to the new venture within the Anorak City blog...'The IMDB project'.

movies.jpg

So what's it all about? Well I realised in conversations with film buffs over the last few years that I had missed out on watching some of (what the mass film watching audience) would call the best films ever. Yes I've never seen The Godfather, One flew over the cuckoos nest, any of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and...to my Brother-in-law's amazement....any Indiana Jones film!! I can hear you all gasping as you read this.

Dog Vader anyone?

By Steve Wollaston on Jul 29, 10 07:19 AM

Now here at Anorak City we are not advocating the dressing up of dogs.

All we are merely saying is that if you are going to dress one up then what better costumes than Darth Vader, Princess Leiah and Yoda.
