Dr Who : the end of an era (and about time too!)
So, did the earth move for you?
David Tennant's Dr Who swansong was so heavily hyped, it was never going to live up to expectation.
But did any of us expect it to be such a mixed bag?
The whole End Of Time story about the Master transforming the human race into the 'Master Race' in his own image was twaddle.
And the head-shaking special effects were just silly.
Having endured the depressing first half (saved only by the poignant cuppa chat between Tennant and Cribbins) I sat down to second helping on New Year's Day.
And it went from bad to worse.
Read on and weep ...
The annoying cactii aliens were strictly second-rate, the Master clones even more annoying. Even Tennant was getting on everyone's nerves.
But then, just as despair beckoned, it started to get better.
Again, it was a quiet chat between the Doctor and Wilf that saved the day. As the two debated death, stranded in the cactus-ship, hope bloomed.
And (let's forget the World War 2 spoof dogfight against the missiles, eh?) it blossomed during the standoff between the Doctor, the Master and evil Time Lord Timothy Dalton.
This was briefly Dr Who at its best.
And, then, the cruel twist in the tale as we discovered just whose four-times knock signalled the end was a stroke of genius.
Cut! That's a wrap!
If only.
The long farewell that followed was seat-shufflingly awful.
One by one the Doctor said his farewells.
To Martha and Mickey, now married and fighting Sontarans (biffing the bad guy with a hammer wasn't quite cutting edge ...)
To Sarah Jane, rescuing Luke Smith from the path of a speeding car (did he really have to? the brat's infuriating ...)
To Joan Redfearn's descendant, asking if the Doctor's human love ended up happy (nice touch, but you had to know the backstory ...)
To Capn Jack, in a shameless homage to Star Trek's Mos Eisley Cantina (but did we really have to have the obligatory right-on gay message?)
To Wilf, at Donna's wedding (nice touch to say he borrowed the ã1 from Geoffrey Noble, Donna's dead father ...)
To Donna, with a glance that seemed to confirm that one day she'd become the mysterious old lady who foretold the Doctor's demise (Daniel Faraday's mum anyone?)
And, of course, to Rose, in the year 2005 just before Chris Eccleston took her away from it all. (Couldn't he just have told her to steer clear of dodgy Northerners and saved her a whole heap of heartbreak?)
I wouldn't have been surprised to seeing the clone daughter, American wife and even K9 to pop up, the way it was being dragged out.
So a series that could have gone out on a real high as Wilf knocked softly on that containment cell, drowned in sugary sentiment.
And the really, really bad news? Matt (Geronimo!) Smith was truly awful.
Maybe Tennant should stick around to give acting lessons.

nooooo no no no no no!
David Tennant will go down in history as the man that made doctor who more modern, funny, young and appealing to a wider range of people. Mr Ecclescake looked old and slightly dodgy in my opinion next to Billy Piper and as for the new kid, sorry not a doctor, more of a med student!!
For these reasons and so many more, Tennant deserved a good send off, as did Russel T Davies
i don't know about you, but i think David should have stayed on for the 5th series, but watching the show and seeing Matt for the first time, i found him warming and quite comical, lets give the sheffield lad a chance, i think he'll be quite good at the new job as the 11th doctor, i will miss David greatly but the dr must go on, to save the universe from the Aliens, and the choice of companion for him is quite brilliant go on Steven Moffett, show us whovians what your brilliance is all about.
I agree with some of your comments here and am still wondering how the Doctor managed to go back on his personal timeline?
PARADOX anyone?
Surely this review isn't serious?
This was the best episode so far and the final 20 mins actually mad eme tear up (not that I'd say that down the pub so keep it quiet!)
Tennant was ther best Doctor and he and Cribbins acting in this episode put other shows to shame.
Bravo RTD and Mr Tennant - you sure will be missed!
I agree, Smith was a bumbling fool.

Ugh, this 'edgy' review makes me cringe. This was by far one of the best outings of the 10th Doctor to date, and a fitting farewell to David. And why all the hate towards Matt Smith? He's set to be all that David was and more; it's just that hating him's now the 'cool' thing to do. The reviewer baselessly slates a children's show for being what it is, and then attempts to claw back any credit he has left by conforming to the common hatred for Matt Smith. This review is baseless, hateful, smarmy and all-out drivel. But then again, what else can be expected from a backwater site like this..?
