Dr Who Christmas Special: A defence
I fear my fellow Anorak City blogger Paul Cole has been a little bit too harsh on David Tennant's swansong as the good doctor.
While there were plenty of problems with the farewell to DT and the introduction of Matt Smith - it wasn't a car crash.
Now I must admit I sat through the first half of the special struggling to understand what was going on.
The Master was back, kind of, and suddenly had special powers while there was lots of running (as usual) and general padding before the big plot finally got underway.
It was rescued for me at the very last moment with the revelation the sound of drums were a Time Lord's heartbeat. So simple, yet so clever.
The second half was much more enjoyable, with plenty of verve and action with a sprinkling of memorable character moments (the Dr with the Master and Cribbins) and laugh-out-loud lines (Worst. Rescue. Ever.)
Of course the return of the Time Lords was all too brief and I may have to watch it again a few times before I totally work out the plot. But it was still above average Who.
Now for the elongated ending. I thought it worked rather well and it was a treat to see all those old faces come back, especially Jessica Hynes.
But all in all the last 15 minutes were not as good as Christopher Ecclestone's 10-second exit ("Rose, before I go I just wanna tell you - you were fantastic... absolutely fantastic... and d'you know what? So was I!")
The jury's out on Matt Smith although the trailer for the new series was kicking.
Only time will tell...

Just to throw my two pennies in.
I'm not going to comment on the whole Tennant thing - I am new to the whole 'new Dr Who' thing.
I enjoyed the overly cheesy episode despite cringing through most of it. It was enjoyable.
where I will disagree with you though Dan is that Matt Smith's introduction was car crash tv.
He was like an excitable kid who had been sniffing glue after a vat of Red Bull and a bucket of blue M&M's.
