Dr Who popularity has stunned me - David Tennant
AS THE clock counts down for the current Time Lord, David Tennant has revealed how playing the role of Doctor Who changed his life for ever.
The Scottish star, recently voted by Who fans as the best Doctor ever - surpassing even Tom Baker's idiosyncratic 1970s heyday - admitted that taking over the keys to the Tardis became an "all-consuming" whirlwind that caused his profile to rise meteorically.
"It's sort of bewildering," said Tennant, who ends his four-year tenure as the Time Lord in a two-part special beginning on Christmas Day.
"We always thought that when the honeymoon period was over things would settle down, but with every series it seems to get more and more attention."
The once popular sci-fi franchise had become a long-shelved liability for the BBC before Swansea scriptwriter Russell T Davies kick-started it to life again in 2005, and even the first series of the revived format, starring Christopher Eccleston, failed to capture the public imagination as Tennant's Doctor has.
But the actor said he had been stunned by the level of public interest in him since taking the job.
"You know you're going to have to cope with it on some level," said the 38-year-old, who quickly found himself the new target of tabloid attention. "But I defy anyone to really know what it feels like.
"Before, when I saw people who were famous, others would whisper and point and it would feel as though a very powerful individual had walked by.
"But actually, once you are that person, it just feels scary. All the time."
