2012 : Now there's a TV spin-off series, too

Been to see the big end of the world movie 2012 yet?

Then be warned you're signing up for the long haul.

Not only is Roland Emmerich's movie packed with every disaster movie cliché known to Hollywood but there's a TV spin-off in the works.

(And if that gives the game away that not EVERYONE on Earth dies, then sorry! But c'mon, you know anything by Emmerich has to have a happy ending).

Think Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow and you'll get the picture.

Emmerich says there's "plenty to do in a TV show" and that that this one could run and run.

"The plan is that it is 2013 and it's about what happens after the disaster," he says.

"It's about the resettling of Earth. That is very, very fascinating. It's a TV show that picks up where the movie leaves off.

"I think it will focus on a group of people who survived - but not necessarily on the arks.

"Maybe they were on a piece of land that was spared, or one that became an island in the process of the crust moving. There are so many possibilities!"

One possibility is seems to rule out is the return of John Cusack to the starring role.

After a spate of big-name sci-fi signings (Robert Carlyle in Stargate Universe and Joseph Fiennes in Flash Forward, for instance) you'd have thought Cusack might be up for it.

But with some fans saying 2012 is a disaster, rather than a disaster movie, it'd be a tough call to make.
