Stargate Universe : so far, so Star Trek
After a chaotic opening in which the crew was, literally, thrown together, the much hyped Stargate Universe failed to fire on all thrusters.
The feel was more comfy Star Trek than classic Stargate or, say, Battlestar Galactica.
The idea that they'll all drift along, dropping in on a different planet each week through the shipboard stargate is a little too easy.
It'll be interesting to see who gets to wear the ill-fated red jersey of the away team.
But, let's be fair, there were an awful lot of characters to be introduced, and a whole heap of backstory in the first two episodes.
Of the main characters, no surprise that Robert Carlyle's Dr Nicholas Rush took the honours.
Just like Malcolm McDowell's Dr Tolian Soran in Star Trek Generations and Ian Holm's android Science Officer Ash in Alien, here is a man with a hidden agenda.
My guess is that he knew what lay behind the ninth chevron of the stargate and planned on boarding the good ship Destiny all the time.
He's certainly more familiar with the Ancients' drifting ship than he's letting on. And, of course, he's more interested in the ship than the survivors.
Louis Ferreira is suitably square-jawed as Col Everett Young and David Blue does a decent Hurley impersonation as Eli Wallace, the computer games geek along for the ride.
The scene in which the latter was unexpectedly beamed up from his mother's house was priceless, proving a touch of humour does no harm.
I could have done without Elyse Levesque's whinging Chloe Armstrong and psycho soldier Sgt Ronald Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) was just too angry all the time.
But the absolute star of the show is Destiny herself. You can see where the budget has been spent - this a spaceship with old-fashioned Doom corridor character.
