Defying Gravity : BBC sci-fi series shows sex in space

It's the Beeb's big new sci-fi project - and it's going to send temperatures soaring.

When Defying Gravity launches on BBC2 later this year, viewers will get an eyeful.

One of the key scenes shows a scantily-clad couple having sex in zero gravity.

Think James Bond and Holly Goodhead in Moonraker - but with fewer clothes.

In fact, sex plays a big role in the 13-episode series that's already running in the States.

The premise is simple: four photogenic men and four women are sent into orbit on a six-year mission.

Each has a tangled romantic past - and a libido-suppressing device which is, you guessed it, removable.

But don't expect Emmanuelle In Space. This is more Grey's Anatomy in orbit, with lots of mawkish muzak, girl talk and romantic dilemmas.

Not surprising, given that the brains behind the project are James Parriott, executive producer of Grey's Anatomy and Michael Edelstein, who worked on Desperate Housewives.

At the heart of the piece is a discussion on the ethics of abortion. It's banned back on earth, and one of the spaceship's crew is secretly pregnant.

But don't tune out just yet.

Why is it that one of the team keeps hearing a baby crying? What is the mission really about? Could it be a sinister experiment?

The series gets spookier as it progresses. Just a shame that all the crew members look like catalogue models when some ugliness would up the realism.

Defying Gravity has just about defied the critics in the US - but its future is uncertain. ABC ended it early with five episodes still to run.

Show publicist Nicole Marostica says ABC is not cancelling the show but that is trying to decide on a time slot to air the remaining episodes of season 1.

I've seen the first couple of this and quite like it... Very concerned at the possibility of it being cancelled. It's all very well ABC saying they're just tweaking the schedule but, as with Caprica and V, that doesn't inspire confidence.

Surely three geeky genre shows I like the look of being cancelled before they even air completely has to be a new low? Thank goodness for Chuck!
