Avatar preview in Birmingham fails to live up to the hype
Just back from the 15-minute sneak preview of James Cameron's CGI fest at Birmingham's Cineworld Broad Street.
So does sci-fi adventure Avatar live up to all the hype about its ground-breaking 3D and special effects surrounds?
In a word, no.
It looks very impressive, and Cameron's planet Pandora is extraordinarily beautiful, as are its graceful blue beings.
But I wasn't blown away by the preview.
The 3D is only as good as we've come to expect, and threatened to take the breath away just once during a flight on a pterodactyl-like creature.
And the various monster antics in the jungle were a little too Jurassic Park for comfort.
What a shame Birmingham didn't celebrate Avatar Day with an IMAX screening, as Manchester did.
I suspect that when the movie opens at Thinktank in the week before Christmas, it will be stunning. But on the more modest screen, it was just OK.
Interesting that, as I left, the film company rep thought that the audience response was "underwhelming".
But let's not rush to full judgement. This is a work in progress and the excerpts we viewed not fully realised yet.
