James Cameron's Avatar coming to Birmingham IMAX

By Paul Cole on Jul 16, 09 10:41 AM

James Cameron's much-hyped 3-D sci-fi blockbuster Avatar is to land in Birmingham's IMAX cinema this December.

The movie is released on December 18 after two years in the making to craft the jaw-dropping special effects needed.

It tells the tale of Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, brought to the planet Pandora where he inhabits the body of an avatar to help with a mining operation.

Trouble is, the local humanoids - a race called the Na'Vi - are getting a raw deal, and Jake ends up leading them against his own military commanders.

Most of the movie is computer-generated, and VIPs given a sneak 24-minute preview report that it pushes the boundaries of film-making.

It ends in the mother of all space battles, making Star Wars look like a push and shove in the schoolyard.

And, of course, it's got Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana, too.

Keep a watch here and on the IMAX site for dates and times.
