Was Battlestar realistic?

Battlestar Galactica was a mighty series that's no quite over yet (there's the mini-movie The Plan to come as well as the spin-off series Caprica), and one of it's strengths was its gritty realism.

Well I say gritty, more like darker than the heart of Dick Cheney thrown down a black hole.

But while we can all agree Battlestar has never been a laugh-riot, the realism was questioned by the New Scientist in an interview with 'space medic' Kevin Fong.

Most of the probs are to do with gravity. Or the appearance of it in the deepest reaches of the universe when everyone should be floating about and rapidly losing their hair.

What the series did get right was the psychology of the situation.

Your civilisation is almost extinct and you're being chased round the stars by cyborgs holding a grudge.

No wonder they weren't smiling...
