OK, so it's official.

The four-toed statue on the Lost island is of Egyptian fertility goddess Taweret.

Show creator JJ Abrams confirmed its identity in this month's Wired magazine.

While guest-editing the mag, he dropped in a puzzle which, when solved, gives the answer: "The four-toed statue is Tawaret."

She was the goddess of birth, rebirth and the northern sky - and presumably protected pregnant mums on the island in years past.

Since the statue was all but destroyed, women on the island have risked death when giving birth.
