By Paul Cole on Jul 9, 08 04:20 PM

The Dr Who series finale may have been tense - but behind the scenes the cast went a bit, well, Star Trek.

Filming of the scene where the two Doctors and their companions pilot the TARDIS had to be halted as the cast and crew collapsed in fits of laughter.

The reason: David Tennant & Co all started loudly humming the famous Star Trek theme.

"It was great having all the team together," says Tennant. "We had a high old time swapping stories, telling jokes and having a party. It was very light-hearted.

Nearly 10 million people crept out from behind the settee to find out whether Tennant would survive the series finale of Doctor Who.

At its peak, some 9.8 million viewers - 47 per cent of the total TV audience - tuned in to see the Time Lord defeat the Daleks, according to BBC figures.
