Haunted by the new spooks?

By Paul Cole on Jul 31, 08 01:15 PM

Baffled by the bus billboards all round town?

Spooked by some unfamiliar faces?

Well, now you can rest at ease.

Spooks Code 9.jpg

Spooks: Code 9 is a spin-off series from the MI5 drama we've all come to love.

It starts on BBC Three on Sunday August 10 with a bang.

And how!

The year is 2013. Thames House is gone and regional MI5 Field Offices have sprung up in its place.

London has been evacuated following a nuclear bomb blast and the country's power base has shifted north. In the wake of the attack, MI5 must completely restructure and establish field offices across the UK, working to gather intelligence from the very heart of local communities.

They need young, new officers on the ground - and fast.

Luckily, Britain's youth is more than up to the challenge and is fighting back from the attack with a new sense of patriotism, combined with the hedonism that comes from being face to face with their own mortality.

It is members of this new generation of patriots who help make up MI5's new Field Office 19.

But are six young new recruits tough, moral and clever enough to protect Britain's future?

X FILES.jpg

Yes, I wanted to believe.

But the second big screen case for the X Files team left me cold - and not just because all the action takes place in snowbound Virginia.

Having re-introduced Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) as a not-so-cosy couple sharing the same bed, director Chris Carter is intent on exploring their relationship.

A shame that he didn't explore the plot instead - B-movie serial killer schtick that borrows from the likes of Re-animator and Jeepers Creepers.

After the drama of the beautifully filmed opening scenes, and the suggestion of a real X-files mystery, the movie races downhill into the routine cop thriller precinct.

Confused by Lost?

Then you haven't a hope in hell when the show returns next year.

Producers plan to mess with the timeline so much that viewers won't know where, or when, the action is set.

Executive producer Carlton Cuse says they'll play with the flashback and flash-forward formula.

Ben Linus.jpg

And after Ben Linus 'moved' the island, there will be few clues as to its whereabouts.

"We have something new this time," Cuse told fans at comic book convention Comic-Con in the US. "We're going to mix it up."

Executive producer Damon Lindelof added that the flash-forwards were a bit 'limiting' because they could only tell the stories of the Oceanic Six survivors.

"We could only focus on the Oceanic Six because we didn't want to reveal certain things - like Desmond getting off the island," he said.

"When season five starts, you won't know when or where you are - and the way we tell stories will be different, too."

"But you will be rewarded for hanging on all the way to end of series six."

David Duchovny talks X Files

By Paul Cole on Jul 24, 08 03:41 PM

X FILES.jpg

Anorak City catches up with David Duchovny ahead of the new X-Files movie - and discovers it could be just the start of a series of films.

QUESTION: Did it seem like old times?
DUCHOVNY: The first couple of weeks felt like déjà vu, but then it was just the business of making a movie.

QUESTION: What can you tell us about the film in general...the themes?

DUCHOVNY: Without wanting to take away from the audience an experience of surprise, the themes are the same as the show always was -- you've got belief and faith and the relationship between Mulder and Scully, and how that's developed over the past four or five years. They've not been stuck in time, they've moved on in some fictional realm just as we all have and yet their issues remain the same.

QUESTION: When the X-Files first started it captured the zeitgeist of the country, how is the X-Files different, now that the world has changed?

DUCHOVNY: People say the world changes all the time and yet human nature remains the same. Good stories are going to be good stories and people are going to see them. I don't think people go to see movies because of what is going on in the world; people usually go to escape what is going on in the world,

QUESTION: Why do you think this is the right time for the movie?

DUCHOVNY: I always felt that whatever time it happened it would be fun.

QUESTION: Do you see this as a series of X-Files movies?

DUCHOVNY: Yes, I wouldn't see any reason to do it unless I thought it could be. It's a serial show by its nature - it has a classic relationship with a believer and a non-believer, with this kind of unrequited love in the middle of it which works and can work forever - as long as your stories are good.

Batman breaks Brum records

By Paul Cole on Jul 24, 08 12:20 PM

Batman Knight.jpg

The Dark Knight has set a new box office record at Birmingham's IMAX cinema.

More than 6,000 tickets have already been snapped up to see Batman on the five-storey high screen.

And that smashes Harry Potter out of sight at the 385-seater cinema.

Last night's Midland IMAX premiere was packed not only with punters but special guests, too.

Batman Harlequin.jpg

Batman, Robin, the Joker and Harley Quinn all turned up.

The Batmobile and Batbike from the old Adam West TV series were wheeled out.

And comic book artists toured the crowd, offering instant artwork and caricatures.

Those who attended went away with goodybags containing a three-way hologram poster depicting Batman, The Joker and Harvey Dent.

Plus Batman comics galore, courtesy of Birmingham's mighty Nostalgia & Comics.

BADGE.jpg

But top on the collectable list were the Dark Knight VIP badges issued to those in the private zone.

If you were lucky enough to get one, hold on to it.

"The response to the movie here at IMAX has been phenomenal," says Thinktank media boss Caroline Durbin. "The tickets have been flying out faster than the Caped Crusader.

"We had huge demand for the last Harry Potter film, which we screened in 3D but it was nothing like this. Everyone wants to see The Dark Knight."

Or head over to the Geek Files - our sister site at www.coventrytelegraph.net - for David Bentley's in-depth verdict. But keep the surprises to yourself!

Forget the fan films and teasers.

Here's the real thing.

The official trailer for the new Terminator movie.

And it looks as if the series' reputation may be saved.

I'll be back ...

The ever youthful Richard Alpert is to play the key role when Lost returns for series five.

nestor.jpg

Nestor Carbonell has signed on for the duration after getting assurances that he will become a regular character on the island, rather than a cameo attraction.

So far Alpert has figured in just 10 episodes of Lost, although each appearance has added a new twist to the tale. Now he must help John Locke take control of his new kingdom.

Locke, as we know from the end of series four, has only a short time to live. But, as I've said before, the dead rarely stay dead too long.

Batmanuel 2.jpg

Carbonell's diary is fast filling up. He'll next be seen as the Mayor of Gotham City in the Dark Knight movie which brings Batman back to the big screen next week.

(If you haven't entered Anorak City's competition to win IMAX tickets, shame on you!)

And he's sealed a deal to voice one of the characters in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, yet another Warner Brothers cartoon take on the caped crusader.

Let's just hope he doesn't don once more the mantle of Batmanuel, the spoof superhero he played in The Tick TV series. Yes, it's on DVD if you really must ...
